Canada’s Digital Nomad Visa

Canada does not have a separately-named Digital Nomad Visa as an official IRCC category. Instead, IRCC's 2023 Tech Talent Strategy formally clarified that remote workers employed by — or serving — foreign companies based entirely outside Canada do not engage the Canadian labour market and therefore do not require a Canadian work permit.

As of January 5, 2026, Indian digital nomads entering Canada on a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) can be granted up to 1 year per entry by a CBSA officer — extended from the previous 6-month default. The final duration is determined by the CBSA officer at your port of entry.

A digital nomad is an individual who has the flexibility to work remotely from any global location. Applications for Digital Nomads are made under the visitor visa category. This allows the applicant to:

  • Live in Canada for up to 1 year per entry (as of January 5, 2026 IRCC update)
  • Work remotely for their employer outside of Canada
  • Search for jobs
  • Attend interviews in person in Canada

The Digital Nomad, under the visitor visa category, cannot work for a local employer until they change their visa status to a work permit.

Eligibility for the Canadian Digital Nomad Visa

  • You are currently employed outside of Canada;
  • You are self-employed or a freelancer providing services exclusively to clients based entirely outside Canada — including Indian IT freelancers, consultants, content creators, and digital marketers serving US, UK, European, or Australian clients
  • Your job can be done remotely;
  • You can show sufficient funds to support yourself in Canada for up to 1 year — approximately CAD $2,000–$3,000 per month recommended for major cities (approximately ₹1.24–₹1.86 lakh/month). Bank statements for the last 6 months are typically required.
  • You have accommodation arrangements with close friends or family in Canada will be an added advantage, to show that you have connections in Canada.
  • You can demonstrate genuine intent to leave Canada at the end of your authorised stay — supported by ties to India such as property ownership, family, employment contracts, or active client relationships

Note:

The final authorised stay duration is determined by the CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) officer at your port of entry. You must demonstrate genuine intent to leave Canada at the end of your authorised stay.

Post Visa options after applying for a Digital Nomad Visa

  • Secure a Canadian Work Permit.
  • If a Canadian employer offers you a job during your stay → apply for a Canadian work permit → gain Canadian work experience → qualify for Express Entry (Canadian Experience Class) or a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) → apply for PR. Being physically present in Canada significantly improves your chances of securing an employer-backed PR pathway..
  • Apply for a Visitor Record (extension of stay) through IRCC before your authorised stay expires, OR leave Canada and re-enter on a new TRV — there is no formal renewal of a Canada visitor visa.

Steps to apply for a Canada Digital Nomad Visa

  • Step 1: Check your eligibility.
  • Step 2: Arrange the checklist of documents required.
  • Step 3: Apply for the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) through IRCC's official application portal at ircc.canada.ca. Indian nationals must apply for a TRV — not an eTA.
  • Step 4: Submit all the required documents.
  • Step 5: Get the visa decision and fly to Canada.

Tax Considerations for Indian Digital Nomads in Canada

183-Day Rule: If you stay in Canada for more than 183 days in a calendar year, you may be deemed a Canadian tax resident by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) — making you potentially liable for Canadian income tax on your worldwide income.

India and Canada have a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA). If you are already paying income tax in India on your remote earnings, the DTAA may reduce or eliminate your Canadian tax liability for the same income. However, tax obligations vary by individual circumstances.

If you are planning a stay of more than 6 months in Canada on the digital nomad arrangement, consult a cross-border tax accountant familiar with both Indian and Canadian tax law before travelling.

Are Indian Freelancers Eligible for the Canada Digital Nomad Visa?

Yes. Indian IT professionals, software developers, content creators, digital marketers, data analysts, and consultants who serve US, UK, Australian, or European clients — through platforms such as Upwork, Toptal, Fiverr, or direct contracts — are eligible for the Canada digital nomad arrangement. All clients must be entirely outside Canada. If any of your current clients are Canadian companies or individuals, you must not serve those clients during your stay in Canada under visitor status — doing so requires a separate Canadian work permit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Canada Digital Nomad Visa?
plus

Canada does not have a separately-named Digital Nomad Visa as an official IRCC category. Instead, IRCC's 2023 Tech Talent Strategy formally clarified that remote workers serving foreign companies based entirely outside Canada do not need a Canadian work permit. Indian applicants apply for a standard Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). As of January 5, 2026, IRCC updated guidelines allowing most visitor visa holders including digital nomads to be granted up to 1 year per entry by a CBSA officer.

How long can I stay in Canada on the Digital Nomad arrangement in 2026?
plus

As of January 5, 2026, IRCC updated its guidelines so most visitor visa holders — including digital nomads — can be granted up to 1 year per entry by a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer at the port of entry. Previously the default authorised stay was 6 months. The final duration is determined by the CBSA officer. You must demonstrate genuine intent to leave Canada at the end of your authorised stay. Source: IRCC January 5, 2026 policy update.

Can Indian citizens apply for the Canada Digital Nomad Visa?
plus

Yes. Indian citizens can apply for the Canada Digital Nomad arrangement by applying for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) — not an eTA. The eTA applies only to visa-exempt nationalities such as UK and US passport holders. Indian passport holders must apply for a TRV online through IRCC's official portal at ircc.canada.ca. Processing typically takes approximately 70 days. Indian employed remote workers and self-employed freelancers whose clients are entirely outside Canada are both eligible.

Do I need a TRV or eTA as an Indian passport holder?
plus

Indian passport holders must apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) — not an eTA. The Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) is only available to visa-exempt nationalities such as UK, US, and EU passport holders. It does not apply to Indian nationals. Apply for your TRV online through IRCC's official portal at ircc.canada.ca. Once your TRV is approved, you can travel to Canada and be granted a stay of up to 1 year by the CBSA officer at the port of entry.

Does the Canada Digital Nomad arrangement require IELTS?
plus

No. The Canada Digital Nomad arrangement under visitor visa does not require an IELTS score, CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) points, an ECA (Educational Credential Assessment), or registration in Express Entry draws. This is a key advantage over Express Entry and PNP immigration pathways, which require IELTS CLB 7+ and typically a CRS score of 480+. Indian professionals who have been waiting for a favourable Express Entry draw can enter Canada under visitor status and network with Canadian employers in person.

Can Indian freelancers apply for the Canada Digital Nomad Visa?
plus

Yes. Indian self-employed professionals and freelancers can enter Canada under the digital nomad arrangement, provided all clients are based entirely outside Canada. This includes Indian IT freelancers, software developers, content creators, digital marketers, data analysts, and consultants serving US, UK, Australian, or European clients through platforms like Upwork, Toptal, or direct contracts. If any of your clients are Canadian companies or individuals, you cannot serve them during your stay in Canada under visitor status — a separate work permit is required.

Can I work for a Canadian employer or serve Canadian clients during my stay?
plus

No. Since IRCC's August 28, 2024 clarification, digital nomads in Canada cannot work for Canadian employers or serve Canadian clients under visitor status. Your employer and all clients must be based entirely outside Canada. This applies to both employed remote workers and freelancers. Serving a Canadian client — even remotely from Canada — requires a separate Canadian work permit. Working for or serving Canadian clients under visitor status is a violation of the conditions of your TRV and can result in removal.

What documents do Indian applicants need for the Canada Digital Nomad TRV?
plus

Required documents include: valid Indian passport; 6 months of bank statements showing sufficient funds (approximately CAD $2,000–$3,000/month, or approximately ₹1.24–₹1.86 lakh); offer letter and salary slips from your employer outside Canada (or client contracts and invoices for freelancers); updated resume and work experience letters; proof of accommodation in Canada; return flight booking; evidence of India ties such as property or family; and valid international health insurance covering your entire stay. Indian nationals are not eligible for provincial health insurance under visitor status.

How much money do I need to show for the Canada Digital Nomad Visa?
plus

There is no fixed income threshold for the Canada Digital Nomad arrangement. However, you must show sufficient funds to support yourself for your intended stay. For major cities — Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal — approximately CAD $2,000–$3,000 per month is recommended (approximately ₹1.24–₹1.86 lakh per month). For a 12-month stay, plan to show approximately CAD $24,000–$36,000 (approximately ₹14.9–₹22.3 lakh). Bank statements for the last 6 months are typically submitted. Funds must come from employment or client income entirely outside Canada.

What are the visa fees for the Canada Digital Nomad TRV?
plus

The fees for the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) used for the Canada digital nomad arrangement are: Visitor Visa application fee — CAD $100 (approximately ₹6,200); Biometric fee — CAD $85 (approximately ₹5,270). The exchange rate used here is approximately CAD $1 ≈ ₹62 as of April 2026 — verify the current rate before your application. These fees are paid during the online application process through IRCC's portal at ircc.canada.ca. There are no additional fees beyond these standard TRV charges.

How long does Canada Digital Nomad TRV processing take?
plus

TRV (Temporary Resident Visa) decisions are currently being made within approximately 70 days of application for Indian applicants. Processing times vary and may be longer during high-volume periods. Apply well in advance of your planned travel date — at least 10–12 weeks is recommended to allow adequate time for processing, biometric collection if required, and any additional document requests from IRCC. Check the current processing time using IRCC's official processing time tool at ircc.canada.ca/english/information/times/index.asp.

Do I need health insurance for the Canada Digital Nomad Visa?
plus

Yes. Valid international health insurance covering your entire stay in Canada is required. Indian nationals under visitor status are not eligible for any provincial health insurance plan — such as OHIP in Ontario or MSP in British Columbia. Healthcare in Canada is expensive without insurance. Ensure your policy covers medical emergencies, hospitalisation, and repatriation for the full duration of your stay. Carry proof of your health insurance when you travel and present it to the CBSA officer at the port of entry if requested.

What are the tax implications of staying in Canada for more than 183 days?
plus

If you stay in Canada for more than 183 days in a calendar year, you may be deemed a Canadian tax resident by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), potentially making your worldwide income liable for Canadian income tax. India and Canada have a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) — if you are already paying income tax in India on remote earnings, the DTAA may reduce or eliminate your Canadian liability. If planning a stay beyond 6 months, consult a cross-border tax accountant before travelling.

Can the Canada Digital Nomad Visa lead to permanent residency?
plus

Visitor status under the digital nomad arrangement does not directly lead to PR. However, being physically present in Canada significantly helps. If a Canadian employer makes you a job offer during your stay, you can apply for a Canadian work permit, gain Canadian work experience, and then qualify for Express Entry under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). This pathway — visitor → in-person networking → job offer → work permit → Canadian experience → PR — is the most realistic route.

Can I extend my stay in Canada on the Digital Nomad Visa?
plus

There is no formal renewal of a Canadian visitor visa. If you want to remain in Canada beyond your authorised stay, you must either apply for a Visitor Record (extension of stay) through IRCC before your current authorised stay expires — at ircc.canada.ca — or leave Canada and re-enter on a new TRV for a fresh stay. The CBSA officer at re-entry will determine your new authorised stay duration, which can be up to 1 year as of the January 2026 IRCC update.

Can I bring my family to Canada on the Digital Nomad Visa?
plus

Yes. Family members can accompany you to Canada, but each person must apply for their own Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) separately. Your family members will be admitted as visitors under the standard visitor visa category. They cannot work for Canadian employers or serve Canadian clients during their stay. Each family member must meet the standard TRV eligibility criteria independently, including sufficient funds and intent to leave Canada at the end of the authorised stay. Contact Y-Axis for guidance on family TRV applications.

How is the Canada Digital Nomad arrangement different from Express Entry?
plus

The Canada Digital Nomad arrangement under visitor visa requires no IELTS, no CRS score, no ECA, and no Express Entry draw registration — making it accessible for Indian professionals who do not yet qualify for Express Entry. However, it does not provide a direct pathway to PR — a work permit and Canadian work experience are required first. Express Entry is a direct PR route but requires IELTS CLB 7+ and typically a CRS score of 480+. The digital nomad route lets you build toward Express Entry from inside Canada.

What are the best Canadian cities for Indian digital nomads?
plus

The most popular Canadian cities for Indian digital nomads are Toronto (largest Indian professional community in Brampton and Mississauga; major tech and finance hub; rent CAD $2,200–$3,500/month for 1BR), Vancouver (significant Indian community; strong tech sector; comparable cost to Toronto), Montreal (bilingual city; lower cost of living at CAD $1,500–$2,500/month; growing digital economy), and Ottawa (government hub; lower cost; work-life balance). Toronto and Vancouver are most favoured by Indian IT professionals for in-person employer networking.

Can I search for jobs and attend interviews in Canada under the Digital Nomad Visa?
plus

Yes. One of the most significant advantages of the Canada digital nomad arrangement is the ability to attend in-person job interviews with Canadian employers during your stay. Being physically present in Canada allows you to network directly with Canadian tech companies, attend industry events, and meet hiring managers face-to-face — significantly improving your chances of securing a job offer. A Canadian job offer dramatically improves your Express Entry CRS score or opens a Provincial Nominee Program pathway, both of which lead to Canadian PR.
