Permit to work in Canada.

International workers wanting to work in Canada temporarily must obtain a work permit. Also, candidates wishing to work in Canada permanently need to apply for a Canada PR visa. Aspirants must apply through the Temporary Foreign Workers Program (TFWP) and International Mobility Program for a temporary work visa. Canadian employers require Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) documents to invite foreign nationals through the TFWP. No LMIA is required for IMP Candidates wanting to get a Canada PR to migrate to Canada, must apply through Express Entry or Provincial Nominee Programs.

Types of Canada work visa

Canada has two types of work visas through which candidates can apply to work there.

Open Work Permit

Open work permits consist of two sub-categories, which are:

  • Unrestricted work permits: These work permits allow applicants to work in any part of Canada and with employers of their choice. A restricted work permit allows the applicants to work for specific employers, which restricts their freedom of movement.
  • Restricted work permits: A restricted work permit will let the candidates to work for only specific employers, this restricts their freedom of movement.

There are precise requirements for each work permit but some requirements are similar for all visas:

  • Candidates should submit the proof that they will exit Canada once their work permit expires.
  • Applicants must show evidence of having sufficient funds to demonstrate that they can support their families while staying in Canada.
  • They need to strictly follow all the laws of Canada during their stay in that country and should have no criminal cases recorded against them during this period.
  • Applicants should not pose a threat to Canadian society.
  • Candidates have to be in good health. They would need to undergo a medical exam if required.
  • Candidates will not be allowed to work with an employer whose status is not eligible in the list of employers who have not complied with certain conditions.
  • Candidates need to provide additional requirements if officers ask them.

Eligibility to Apply from Within Canada

The eligibility criteria for candidates who apply from within Canada are as follows:

  • Candidates must have work or study permits.
  • The spouse/ common-law partner or parents need to have a valid study or work permits.
  • For the post-graduation work permit (PGWP), the study permit of candidates should still be valid.
  • Candidates must have a temporary work permit, the validity of which should be a minimum of six months.
  • Candidates must wait for the applications for the Canada PR visas to be processed.
  • Applicants need to be recognized as current refugees or protected persons by IRCC.
  • Candidates can also work in Canada even without a work permit. But if they want to switch jobs, they need to apply for work visas.

Eligibility Criteria to Apply from Outside Canada

The eligibility criteria for candidates who apply from outside Canada are as follows:

  • Candidates must meet the requirements based on the country of their origin when migrating to Canada.

Eligibility Criteria after Arrival in Canada at a Port of Entry

  • Candidates must apply for a work visa before they plan to enter Canada
  • Candidates may also apply for work permits after arriving in Canada if
  • They are sanctioned electronic authorizations
  • Candidates need to meet other requirements, depending on the type of work permit for which they have applied.

  • Minimum work experience in a relevant field is required
  • Valid job offer in Canada 
  • A valid passport (6 months validity).
