The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program [CELPIP] tests are Canada’s general English language tests. CELPIP Test results can be used for the purpose of Canadian immigration and professional designation.
The Test is specifically designed for the purposes of assessing a test taker’s abilities in the English language in different everyday situations.
Computer-delivered and in only one sitting, the CELPIP is generally looked upon as a comparatively simpler English test as it involves easy-to-understand English and vocabulary that is based on everyday situations that most of us might encounter in our daily lives. Situations such as communicating in the workplace, interpreting written materials, understanding the news, and interaction with friends.

There are 2 separate kinds of CELPIP tests available
- CELPIP – General [total test time – 3 hours, in 1 sitting, no separate speaking session]: For Canadian permanent residence applications and professional designations. IRCC approved test for Canada PR applications.
- CELPIP – General LS [total test time – about 1 hour, in 1 sitting, no separate speaking session]: For Canadian citizenship applications and professional designation. IRCC approved test for Canadian citizenship applications.
IRCC – Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada – is responsible for facilitating the arrival of immigrants in the country. IRCC also grants Canada PR and the citizenship of Canada.

Are there Bands in CELPIP like the IELTS?
The CELPIP has ‘levels’ in place of the IELTS Bands. Each of the components tested in the CELPIP-General Test and the CELPIP-General LS Test is scored as per a CELPIP level. The CELPIP Level corresponds to the CLB levels. That is, a CELPIP 12 will be a CLB 12.
Can I appear for the CELPIP remotely as the test is completely computer-delivered?
No. Even though the CELPIP test is fully computer-delivered, you will have to appear for the test in person at any of the designated test centres.
What is the passing mark for the CELPIP Test?
There is no pass or fail as such. Each of the components assessed is given a CELPIP level. Ideally, you should contact the institution that you will be applying to in order to know their specific English language requirements.
Where can I give the CELPIP Test? I am not in Canada?
Now available internationally, you can appear for the CELPIP Test in Canada as well as various test centres worldwide – India, the UAE, the US, the Philippines, China and Singapore.
Where can I give CELPIP Test in India?
CELPIP Test centres in India – Hyderabad, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Chennai, and Chandigarh.
How much does a CELPIP Test cost?
The CELPIP General Test costs $280. That would be INR 10,845 approximately.
How soon can I get my CELPIP Test scores?
The test results will be available online within 4 to 5 days of appearing for the test.
What is CELPIP?

Is the CELPIP recognized by IRCC?

The highest band available on the CELPIP Test is that of Level 12, Advanced Proficiency.

As the CELPIP is fully computer-based, can I appear for this exam from anywhere?
No. Even though CELPIP is completely computer-delivered, a candidate will be required to attempt the exam in person at any of the designated exam centres.
Is there any difference in English of Canada?
English in Canada is the diversity of English communicated in Canada. It consists of aspects of American English and British English in its dictionary, in addition to various discrete Canadianisms.
CELPIP accepts British English or American English?
Both American and British English spellings are acknowledged on the CELPIP Exam.
How long does CELPIP exam take?
The total test time for CELPIP – General Test is around 3 hours.
Can I appear for CELPIP test more than 1 time?
An individual can register for CELPIP Test more than 1 time, provided the dates are 30 calendar days apart from each other.
How long will my CELPIP Evaluation Test be valid for?
CELPIP Evaluation Test is valid for 2 years from the date of test.
What is the step-wise process for booking a CELPIP Test?
Before you book your CELPIP Test online, do ensure that you have the required authentic identity document. A debit/credit card would be required for making an online payment.

Testing agencies accommodate individuals with physical disabilities. Relevant medical documentation will have to be submitted.
How will I get confirmation about my CELPIP exam?
Following successful enrolment, a confirmation email – containing the date, time and location of the test – will be sent to the individual.
Do ensure that you bring the original valid identification that you had used for registering for your CELPIP test.
