This means that applicants seeking Canada PR can now choose PTE Core as their official language proficiency test.

What is PTE Core?

PTE Core is a computer-based English language test that evaluates your speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills in real-world, general English scenarios. PTE Core for Canada PR and Express Entry

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

As a first official language test, PTE Core can contribute up to 24 points under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Scores in each skill - speaking, listening, reading, and writing - are mapped to corresponding CLB levels, which determine your language points for Canada PR eligibility.

Where Can the PTE Exam Be Used?

The PTE Academic is widely accepted for both study abroad and immigration purposes. It is officially recognized by the governments of Australia and New Zealand for visa and permanent residency applications. Additionally, thousands of universities and colleges across Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Europe, and other major study destinations accept PTE Academic scores as proof of English language proficiency.

What is the Full Form of PTE?

PTE stands for Pearson Test of English. It is an internationally recognized English proficiency exam designed to assess a candidate’s ability to speak, read, write, and understand English. The test is used for academic admissions, work permits, and immigration applications by institutions and governments around the world.

About Pearson and the PTE Exam

The PTE exam is conducted by Pearson, a leading global education company under the PLC Pearson Group. The Pearson Language Tests division is responsible for developing and administering the PTE, which is used to evaluate English proficiency for study, work, and visa purposes. The test provides a reliable, unbiased assessment for non-native English speakers.

PTE Academic Update - Two New Question Types (from 7 August 2025)

Updated August 2026, from Pearson’s official announcement.

Pearson updated PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI for all tests taken after 7 August 2025. Two new question types were added to the Speaking & Writing section:

New question type Task Prompt length Skills assessed Time to answer
Summarize Group Discussion Listen to a discussion between three people, then summarize it in your own words Up to 3 minutes Listening and Speaking 2 minutes
Respond to a Situation Listen to and read a description of a situation, then answer a question about it with an extended spoken response Text up to 60 words Speaking 40 seconds

What else changed:

  • The structure is unchanged. The same three sections and the original 20 question types remain - the two new tasks are additions, bringing the total to 22.
  • Smarter scoring. Responses to some questions are now part-scored by human raters as well as AI. Humans never assess pronunciation or fluency - those remain AI-scored, so your accent is not judged.
  • Enhanced scoring criteria have been introduced for some tasks, set out in Pearson’s updated Score Guide.
  • The test has slightly more questions overall but remains approximately two hours. The time limit for each individual question is unchanged, so there is no additional time pressure.
  • The score report is unchanged - an overall score out of 90 plus skill scores for Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.
  • Scores remain valid for 2 years, and score reports issued before August 2025 remain valid.
  • Recognition is unchanged - the same institutions accept PTE.
  • Australian visa applicants should note that some Department of Home Affairs score requirements changed from 7 August. Check the DHA website for current requirements.

Important: these changes apply only to PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI. PTE Core and PTE Home tests are unchanged.
