DET Test Format and Question Types (2026)
Updated August 2026. The DET was reformed on 1 July 2025 and proctoring requirements changed in September 2025 - material published before mid-2025 describes a format that no longer exists.
Overall structure
The DET does not have separate reading, writing, listening and speaking sections in a fixed order. All four skills are assessed together through a single adaptive section, where the difficulty of each question adjusts in real time to your performance.

What changed on 1 July 2025
• Added - Interactive Speaking. Six questions in a simulated conversation with an animated character, 35 seconds to record each response. Questions build on one another and the audio prompt plays once only.
• Removed - Read Aloud. No longer appears on the test.
• Removed - Listen, Then Speak. No longer appears on the test.
• Expanded - Interactive Listening. Now opens with a Listen and Complete subtask of 3–4 fill-in-the-blank questions. Scenario audio can be paused and replayed, but the timer continues during playback.
• Removed - minimum response times for Interactive Writing, Speak About the Photo, Read Then Speak, and both sample tasks. You may submit as soon as you are satisfied.
• Added from September 2025 - a mandatory secondary camera. A smartphone must be positioned to capture your full screen and keyboard for the whole session. It cannot be the device running the test. Sessions without it correctly placed are invalidated.
Scoring
The DET is scored from 10 to 160 in 5-point increments. Alongside the overall score, the report carries eight subscores:

Subscores map to CEFR levels from A1 to C2, and universities frequently review them to identify specific strengths and gaps. There is no universal pass mark — institutions typically set a requirement between 105 and 130 depending on the programme.
The Writing Sample and Speaking Sample are not scored by the adaptive algorithm, but they are sent directly to every institution you share results with, and admissions officers read and watch them. A weak sample can raise doubts even where the overall score is strong.
Test-day requirements
The proctoring system runs continuously through Parts 2 and 3. A primary webcam must show your full face throughout; the secondary smartphone camera must capture your screen and keyboard. You will be asked to scan your room at the start. No notes, second monitors, other applications or other people in the room are permitted, and any detected copy-paste action invalidates the test. You may take the DET up to three times in any 30-day period.
Duolingo English Test Fees (2026)
New section - fees verified August 2026. These are the fees payable to Duolingo for the test itself and are separate from Y-Axis coaching fees.
The DET is priced in US dollars and the price is the same in every country, though the amount debited in rupees depends on the exchange rate and any local taxes applied at checkout.

What the fee covers and how it behaves:
- The fee includes the full adaptive test across all four skills and unlimited score reports — unlike IELTS, TOEFL and PTE, there is no per-institution charge for sending results.
- Standard results are released within 48 hours of completing the test.
- Once purchased, you have 21 days to take the test. The fee is non-refundable and is forfeited if the test is not completed within that window.
- There is no late booking fee, because the test is available on demand rather than on fixed dates.
- You may take the DET up to three times in any 30-day period; each attempt requires a separate purchase.
- The two-test bundle is the only official discount, saving USD 22 against two separate bookings.
At USD 70, the DET remains substantially cheaper than IELTS, TOEFL, PTE and OET, which is one of the main reasons candidates consider it.
