Sweden's June 2026 Work Permit Reform

On June 1, 2026, Sweden introduced its biggest work permit changes in years. If you're planning to convert a Job Seeker Permit into a Work Permit, or apply for a Work Permit directly, here's what's changed (source: migrationsverket.se):

• New salary threshold: now 90% of Sweden's median salary (currently SEK 34,470/month), up from the previous 80% (SEK 29,680/month). This is reviewed annually, not a fixed number.
• Decision-date rule: the threshold that applies is based on when Migrationsverket decides your case — not when you submitted it. An application filed before June 1, 2026 can still be assessed under the new, higher threshold if the decision comes after that date.
• Transition period for extensions: if you already held a work permit granted before June 1, 2026, and you're applying to extend it between June 1 and December 1, 2026, you're still assessed under the old ~80% threshold (currently SEK 30,640/month). From December 2, 2026, everyone moves to the new standard.
• EU Blue Card: salary threshold unchanged (SEK 53,625/month), but the maximum permit duration was extended from 2 to 4 years.
• Seasonal work permits: duration extended from 6 to 9 months within a 12-month period; salaries for both full-time and part-time roles must now match collective agreement or standard industry practice.
• Mandatory health insurance: if your work permit is valid for one year or less, you must now show proof of comprehensive health insurance - separate from your employer's standard collective insurance - as part of your application. 
• Refusal reasons relating to the employer: Migrationsverket can now refuse a work permit application because of problems connected with the employer, for example criminal behavior or sanctions against the company.
