About LanguageCert

LanguageCert offers several English exams. The ones most relevant to Y-Axis candidates are: LanguageCert Academic - for university admission worldwide and for every Australian visa type that requires English. LanguageCert Academic SELT - the same test taken at a UKVI-approved centre, producing a reference number for UK student visas. LanguageCert General / General SELT - a general-English, four-skill test (A2–C1) aimed at work migration, including UK work visas. LanguageCert ESOL SELT (Speaking & Listening) - two-skill tests at A1, A2 and B1 for UK family, settlement and citizenship routes. Y-Axis coaching is built around the LanguageCert Academic format. Because the Academic SELT uses an identical format, the same preparation applies to UK student-visa candidates.

Course Highlights

Y-Axis LanguageCert coaching, offered LIVE online and in self-paced mode, gives expert guidance on all four skills:

LanguageCert Academic Test Format (2026)

Updated October 2026. LanguageCert Academic has two components — Written and Spoken — and takes about 2 hours 34 minutes in total.

Skill Component Duration Questions / tasks
Listening Written (computer) ~40 minutes 30 questions in 4 parts; every recording is heard twice
Reading Written (computer) 50 minutes 30 questions in 4 parts (Part 1 has two sections)
Writing Written (computer) 50 minutes 2 tasks: 150–200 words and ~250 words
Speaking Spoken (live examiner) ~14 minutes 4 parts, conducted one-to-one by an interlocutor

Listening - what to expect

  • Part 1: short, unfinished exchanges - choose the most natural reply or continuation from three options.
  • Part 2: several short conversations set around campus and study life, each followed by two multiple-choice questions.
  • Part 3: an academic talk, such as a lecture or podcast - complete a set of notes using no more than three words per gap.
  • Part 4: a discussion between several speakers on an academic topic, followed by multiple-choice questions on opinions and details.

Reading - what to expect

  • Part 1: vocabulary in context - pick the word that best replaces a highlighted phrase, then fill gaps in a short passage.
  • Part 2: a text with sentences removed - place the correct sentences back, with extra sentences included as distractors.
  • Part 3: four short texts on one theme - find which text contains each piece of information.
  • Part 4: a longer argumentative text - answer four-option multiple-choice questions on meaning, attitude and argument.

Writing - what to expect

  • Task 1 (150–200 words): write a short academic report or article based on visual data such as an infographic, taking and supporting a position.
  • Task 2 (around 250 words): write a discursive essay on an academic topic - arguing, persuading or speculating, and evaluating different views.

Speaking - what to expect

  • Part 1 - Introduction: personal details followed by short questions on everyday and study topics.
  • Part 2 - Role plays: two short academic-setting role plays in which you both respond to and start the conversation.
  • Part 3 - Read aloud: a brief preparation period, reading a short academic text aloud, then follow-up questions.
  • Part 4 - Presentation: one minute to plan, then about two minutes presenting on an academic topic from a prompt, followed by questions.

Because the speaking examiner is a real person, interaction skills - asking for clarification, keeping a conversation moving, and responding naturally - matter more than in tests where speaking is recorded to a computer. Y-Axis AI-evaluated speaking interviews are designed to build exactly these habits.

LanguageCert Score

LanguageCert Academic is not a pass/fail test. Each skill and your overall result are reported on the LanguageCert Global Scale from 0 to 100, and the overall score determines the CEFR level shown on your certificate. Writing and Speaking are marked by trained human assessors, and the test report includes feedback on these two skills.

CEFR level Global Scale score What it generally indicates
C2 90–100 Highly proficient — near-native command for demanding academic and professional work
C1 75–89 Advanced — effective, flexible use of English in academic settings
B2 60–74 Upper-intermediate — the common minimum for degree-level study
B1 40–59 Intermediate — typical for foundation and pathway programmes

Universities set their own cut-offs, often as an overall score plus a minimum in each skill (for example, “65 overall with no skill below 60”). LanguageCert publishes an official linking table between LanguageCert Academic and IELTS Academic scores for institutions; always check the exact requirement of your university or visa route.

Where is LanguageCert Accepted?

Destination Purpose Key points

Below-degree study or non-university sponsors: Academic SELT at a UKVI centre. Work visas: General SELT. Family/settlement/citizenship: ESOL SELT Speaking & Listening (A1–B1).

Recognition lists change frequently. Y-Axis counsellors confirm the current acceptance status for your university or visa route before you book.

LanguageCert Scores for Australian Visas

Minimum LanguageCert Academic scores set by the Australian Department of Home Affairs for each English level (tests taken on or after 7 August 2025):

English level Listening Reading Writing Speaking
Functional Overall score of 38
Vocational 41 44 45 54
Competent 57 60 64 70
Proficient 67 71 78 82
Superior 80 83 89 89

For points-tested skilled visas (subclasses 189, 190 and 491), Competent English is the minimum, Proficient English adds 10 points and Superior English adds 20 points.

LanguageCert Scores for UK Visas (SELT)

UKVI recognises LanguageCert Academic SELT and General SELT at the following thresholds on the Global Scale. The required level depends on your visa type — for example, B1 for most below-degree study and B2 for degree-level study.

CEFR level Academic SELT (minimum per skill) General SELT (minimum per skill)
B1 40 40
B2 60 60
C1 75 75
C2 90 Not offered

Verify the current thresholds on the GOV.UK list of approved Secure English Language Tests before booking.

LanguageCert Test Fees (2026)

These are fees payable to LanguageCert for the test itself and are separate from Y-Axis coaching fees.

Test option Published fee
LanguageCert Academic — Online (live proctoring) From US$140
LanguageCert Academic — Test centre US$250
LanguageCert Academic SELT — UKVI-approved test centre US$270
LanguageCert General SELT — UKVI-approved test centre US$270
LanguageCert ESOL SELT Speaking & Listening (A1, A2 or B1) US$200

Content-team action before publishing: the fees above are the US-dollar prices shown on LanguageCert’s official booking page in October 2026. LanguageCert prices each country separately, so open the booking page with India selected and replace these with the current INR fee for each option.

LanguageCert Registration

Booking is done directly with LanguageCert or through an approved partner. The usual steps are:

  • Create an account on the official LanguageCert website.
  • Choose the right test for your purpose — Academic, Academic SELT, General SELT or ESOL SELT.
  • Select the delivery mode (test centre or online) and a date for each component.
  • Pay the test fee and keep the confirmation.
  • Complete the system check (online) or note the reporting time and ID requirements (test centre).

Y-Axis offers LanguageCert test-registration support for candidates in India with every coaching package, so you choose the right test version for your goal the first time.

LanguageCert Eligibility & Requirements

  • There are no academic or age-related entry requirements, and no preparation course is compulsory.
  • A valid passport is required for the online test; test centres accept valid photo ID as specified at booking, and a passport is strongly recommended for visa use.
  • For the online test you need a suitable computer with a webcam and microphone, a stable internet connection and a quiet private room.
  • For Australian visas you must sit at a test centre; for UK visas that require a SELT you must sit at a UKVI-approved SELT centre.

LanguageCert Validity

LanguageCert certificates do not have an expiry date. However, the organisation receiving your result decides how recent it must be — UK visa applications accept SELT results for two years, Australian visas generally accept tests taken within the three years before you apply (two years for student visas), and most universities ask for results no older than two years.

LanguageCert vs IELTS vs PTE Academic

Feature LanguageCert Academic IELTS Academic PTE Academic

Speaking Live one-to-one with an examiner Face-to-face with an examiner Recorded into a microphone
Scheduling Written and Speaking can be up to 14 days apart Speaking same day or within a few days Single sitting
Delivery Test centre or online Mostly computer-delivered at a centre Computer-based at a centre
Scoring Global Scale 0–100, CEFR B1–C2 Bands 0–9 10–90
Results Within 5 working days 1–5 days (computer) Typically 2 days
Best suited to Australia (all visas), UK SELT routes, Ireland, university admission Widest global recognition across study and migration Australia, UK, NZ and university admission

No test is objectively easier. Candidates who like talking to a person but want a less fast-paced computer test often prefer LanguageCert; those who need the broadest recognition, including Canadian or New Zealand immigration, should choose IELTS or PTE.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the LanguageCert Academic test?
plus
It is a four-skill English test — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — designed for university admission and visa purposes. It is multilevel, so a single sitting places you anywhere from CEFR B1 to C2.
How long is the LanguageCert Academic test?
plus
About 2 hours 34 minutes in total: roughly 40 minutes of Listening, 50 minutes of Reading and 50 minutes of Writing in the written component, plus a Speaking test of about 14 minutes.
Is LanguageCert accepted for Australian PR?
plus
Yes. Since 7 August 2025 it has been accepted for all Australian visa types that require English, including subclasses 189, 190, 491, 482 and 500. It must be taken at a test centre for visa purposes.
Can I use LanguageCert for a UK visa?
plus
Yes, but you need the SELT version taken at a UKVI-approved centre where a SELT is required — Academic SELT for student visas, General SELT for work visas, or ESOL SELT Speaking & Listening for family, settlement and citizenship routes. Degree-level applicants to UK universities can often use the standard Academic test.
Is LanguageCert accepted for Canada PR?
plus
No. IRCC does not currently accept LanguageCert for permanent residence or Express Entry. Canadian immigration candidates should take CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training or PTE Core. Many Canadian universities, however, accept LanguageCert Academic for admission.
Can I take LanguageCert online from home?
plus
Yes, with live online proctoring and a valid passport. Online results are accepted by many universities, but not for Australian visas or UK SELT purposes, which require a test centre.
Is there a pass mark?
plus
No. LanguageCert Academic is not pass/fail. You receive a score from 0 to 100 for each skill and overall, and each university or authority sets its own minimum.
How soon are results available?
plus
Official results are normally issued within five working days of your last component, followed by an e-certificate.
Do I have to take Speaking and the written test on the same day?
plus
No. The two components can be taken on the same day, subject to availability, or separately within 14 days of each other.
How long is a LanguageCert result valid?
plus
The certificate itself does not expire, but receiving organisations set their own limits — typically two years for UK visas, universities and Australian student visas, and three years for most other Australian visas.
