The current Australia PR migration intakes must remain according to the big businesses in Australia and ACTU. These have formed a rare and unparalleled alliance to support ‘Big Australia’. They have also demanded that the Federal Government of Australia must maintain the existing Australia PR migration intakes.
The coalition of the ethnic lobby, employer groups, and peak unions is historic. They will release a joint policy document that will warn regarding the social and economic consequences of a reduction in immigration.
The ACTU has involved itself in this alliance even as it embarks on an impressive campaign to harness access of employers to overseas workers. The joint policy document is going to be the first of its kind immigration document in the history of Australia. It calls for maintaining the 190,000 immigration intake. The levels of long-term immigration must be proportionate to the population, as quoted The Australian.
The alliance will witness the signing of contract between ACTU, United voice, and Australian Industry Group. United Voice is one of the most influential unions in Australia while AIG is the top employer body. AIG represents 60,000 businesses in Australia. They will together highlight the benefits of maintaining the existing Australia PR migration intakes.
The united stand by the unions and employers body is aimed as a circuit-breaker. This is with respect to the enhanced heated debate for immigration in Australia. The debate is becoming xenophobic and toxic according to the signatories. This risks ignoring the monetary benefits underlying the skilled immigration according to the alliance members.
The joint policy document is being spearheaded by the Migration Council. This is also a sign that for the first time employer groups and unions have reached a broader agreement on skilled immigration.
