German Language Course Visa: Eligibility, Requirements & Process

The German Language Course Visa (§16f AufenthG) allows Indian citizens to stay in Germany for 3–12 months to attend an intensive German language course of at least 18 hours per week. This visa is designed for applicants who want to improve their German language skills for future higher education, vocational training, or career opportunities in Germany. To qualify, you must provide proof of enrolment in a recognised language institute, demonstrate sufficient financial resources by showing €992 per month (€11,904 per year) to cover your living expenses, and pay a €75 visa fee. During your stay, you can work up to 20 hours a week, allowing you to gain work experience while learning the language. However, this visa is intended primarily for language learning and does not automatically permit enrolment in a university degree programme without obtaining the appropriate residence permit later.

The German Language Course Visa, officially the visa for language acquisition under Section 16f (1) of the German Residence Act (AufenthG), is designed for applicants who want to move to Germany to pursue an intensive German language course. German Language Short Course Visa

The German Language Course Visa allows immigrants from non-EU countries to enroll in an extensive German language course taught by native experts. The visa's validity depends on the course length you have applied for. Language courses in Germany usually last 3-12 months. Therefore, you can migrate to Germany on this visa and stay there for up to a year upon eligibility. However, you will only be allowed to apply for an extension or stay in Germany after completion of your course.

The Government of Germany offers two types of Language Course visas. Depending upon the length and purpose of your visit to Germany, you can apply for any of the following:

• Language Learning Visa: This is for immigrants willing to learn German in Germany and return to their home country upon completion of their course
• Residency for Study Preparation: This is for students and academicians who have already enrolled or are willing to pursue higher studies at a German higher education institute or University.

Note: Applicants who are yet to apply for a German student visa for their higher education will have to return to their home country upon completion of their course.

Eligibility for the German Language Course Visa

You can apply for the German Language Course Visa if you:

• Be a citizen of a non-EU country, including India.
• Be enrolled in an intensive German language course with at least 18 hours of classes per week on weekdays. Part-time, evening, or weekend courses are not accepted and are one of the main reasons for visa rejection.
• Show proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay in Germany. You must have €992 per month (€11,904 for 12 months). This can be shown through a blocked account (Sperrkonto) or a formal sponsorship letter (Verpflichtungserklärung) from a sponsor living in Germany.
• Hold a valid passport.
• Have health insurance that covers your entire stay in Germany.
• Have no criminal record.

Proof of Funds: How Much Money Do You Need?

You must prove that you have enough money to pay for your living expenses while studying in Germany. In 2026, you need to show €992 per month, which equals €11,904 for a 12-month course. If your course is shorter, multiply €992 by the number of months you will stay. The most common way to show proof of funds is by opening a blocked account (Sperrkonto) with approved providers such as Expatrio, Fintiba, or Coracle. After arriving in Germany, you can withdraw up to €992 per month from the account.

Can I Work on a German Language Course Visa?

Yes. You can work up to 20 hours per week while attending your language course. This rule has been in effect since 1 March 2024 under Germany's Skilled Immigration Act. However, this visa is only meant for learning German. You cannot change this visa into a Student Visa, Ausbildung Visa, or Work Visa while you are in Germany. After your language course ends, you must return to India and apply for a new visa if you want to study or work in Germany. It is a good idea to plan your next step before your language visa expires.

Documents Required for the German Language Course Visa

You need the following documents when applying:

• Completed German National (D) Visa application form.
• Valid passport with at least 6 months' validity and two blank pages.
• Recent biometric passport-size photographs.
• Updated CV (Lebenslauf) in the German tabular format.
• Confirmation letter from the language school showing your course dates and at least 18 hours of weekday classes per week.
• Proof that you have paid the language course fee (full or partial, as required by the school).
• Proof of funds through a blocked account (€992 per month / €11,904 per year) or a formal sponsorship letter (Verpflichtungserklärung).
• Letter of motivation explaining why you want to learn German and what you plan to do after completing the course.
• Proof of accommodation in Germany.
• Health insurance valid for your entire stay.
• Invitation letter from your host in Germany (if applicable).
• Details of any previous visas, if you have travelled abroad before.

How to Apply for a German Language Course Visa from India?

Step 1: Join an intensive German language course with at least 18 hours of classes per week on weekdays and pay the required course fee.

Step 2: Open a blocked account (Sperrkonto) and deposit €992 for each month of your planned stay in Germany (€11,904 for a 12-month course).

Step 3: Register and submit your visa application online through the Consular Services Portal (CSP). Upload all the required documents. Once your application is checked, you will receive a link to book your visa appointment.

Step 4: Book your appointment at VFS Global using the link provided through the CSP. Visit the visa centre with your original documents and complete the biometric process.

Step 5: Pay the German Language Course Visa fee of €75 during the application process.

Step 6: Track your visa application. Processing usually takes 6–12 weeks. Once your visa is approved, you can travel to Germany and start your language course.

The application fee for the German national (D) visa, including the language course visa, is €75, payable at your VFS appointment (a VFS service charge applies in addition). The €75 fee is confirmed by the German Federal Government.
