The Temporary Graduate visa programs in Australia

The Australian Government announces new changes to the Temporary Graduate visa programs in its recent Migration Strategy. These changes will be effective from July 1, 2024. The new changes aim to adjust the visa streams with the levels of study managed by applicants. The Temporary Graduate visa allows international students who have completed a course to be registered under the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). The Temporary Graduate visa offers many benefits.

Benefits of the Temporary Graduate Visa

  • Stay: Temporary Graduate visa holders can stay in Australia to explore opportunities and gain work experience after completing their studies.

Graduate Work stream

The upcoming changes to the Temporary Graduate visa program in Australia will significantly adjust the Graduate Work stream, now known as the Post-Vocational Education Workstream.

The upcoming changes to the Temporary Graduate visa program will also bring some changes in the Graduate Work stream, now known as the Post-Vocational Education Workstream.

 

The Changes in the Post-Vocational Education Workstream

  • The maximum age limit for Post-Vocational Education Workstream applicants is reduced to 35 years.
  • Individuals holding Hong Kong or British National Overseas passports will be eligible till age 50.
  • Applicants not meeting the age requirement for the Post-Vocational Education Workstream can search for other visa options.
  • Applicants must hold an associate degree, diploma, or trade qualification related to their nominated occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
  • Applicants can stay in Australia for up to 18 months.
  • Hong Kong or British National Overseas passport holders can extend their stay for 5 years.

The changes in the Post-Study Work stream

The Post-Study Work stream will be renamed as the Post-Higher Education Work stream.

  • The age limit for Post-Vocational Education Workstream applicants is reduced to 35 years.
  • Individuals holding Hong Kong or British National Overseas passports will be eligible till age 50.
  • Applicants not meeting the age requirement for the Post-Vocational Education Workstream can search for other visa options.
  • The 'select degree' extension, which allowed applicants to stay in Australia, will no longer be available under this stream.
  • Stay periods are adjusted.
    • A bachelor's degree can last for up to 2 years
    • Master’s degree for up to 2 years
    • Masters research and doctoral degree for up to 3 years
  • Hong Kong or British National Overseas passport holders can extend their stay for 5 years.
  • The stay periods for Indian nationals remain unchanged, as per the Australian India – Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA)
    • A bachelor's degree with honors can last for 2 years
    • Bachelor's degree with first-class honors in STEM, including ICT, can stay for 3 years
    • Masters with coursework extended, and research can stay for 3 years
    • Doctoral degrees with PhD can stay for 4 years

 

Second Post-Study Work stream

The Second Post-Study Workstream has been renamed the Second Post-Higher Education Workstream. It has not been altered in any other way.

 

Replacement stream

The Replacement stream will close.
