The Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, known as LMU, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München in German, is a university located in Munich, Bavaria, Germany.

The university comprises 18 faculties to supervise various departments and institutes. One of Germany’s premier research universities, it was established in 1472. The university has more than 51,600 students. Of them, 15% are foreign nationals. 

There are about 18 faculties in the university that offer over 300 degree programs in a variety of disciplines. The university also offers 27 master’s programs which are taught with English as the medium of instruction.

The university does not need students to pay tuition fees, but they must pay €100 as tuition fees if the semester’s duration is fewer than five hours per week.

Besides this, students have to pay €400 to €650 if they avail of off-campus accommodation and €270 to €350 if they reside on-campus. 

The Ludwig Maximilian University Munich has two intakes for admissions – in the Summer and Winter semesters.

To gain admission to LMU, students need to present proof of proficiency scores in the German language along with the same in English language tests like TOEFL, IELTS, and others.

LMU offers a variety of housing options to its foreign students in the form of shared apartments, private rooms, and single apartments.

  • About 13% of students stay in on-campus housing, which costs about €400 per month.
  • Prices of shared apartments and single apartments range from €400 to €650 based on the facilities provided and their locations.
  • Munich Student Union offers well-equipped rooms for accommodation, which are, however, limited.
  • Students can also opt to stay in off-campus accommodation. Since shared flats are reasonably priced, most students opt for them.

  • Aspiring foreign students are advised to register themselves for most of the university’s programs through the International Office of the LMU. For a few master’s programs, the students need to forward their application to the International Office and complete the application form to the individual graduate departments.
