Brexit has the clear potential to become the greatest mess for the UK economy as well as a constitutional and diplomatic muddle in the UK’s modern history. This view was expressed by William Hague the former leader of the Conservative party in Daily Telegraph.
Unless UK Finance Minister Philip Hammond succeeds in achieving a minimal abrupt exit from the EU, Brexit is a disaster with the potential to emerge as the biggest muddle in the history of UK. Given that May failed in her gamble of snap general elections in June 2017, the future of Brexit is more uncertain than ever before. The Cabinet ministers in the UK are squabbling regarding the terms, tone, and pace of the UK’s exit from the EU.
Theresa May is already under huge pressure to alter her original plans of the complete severing of ties with the EU. The former Foreign Minister of the UK, Hague said that the perils of Brexit for UK economy are being underestimated by some supporters of the Brexit.
The steep decline in the growth of the UK economy and even possibility of halting of exit talks with the EU is being ignored by them, added Hague. The consequences of Brexit for the UK and the Brexit process itself could be unpredictable, explained Hague, as quoted by the Indian Express.
William Hague said that the right approach to Brexit was to simplify negotiations. The hurry for legislation must be abandoned, businesses must be reassured and membership of the single market must be continued for the transitional period, elaborated the former Foreign Minister of the UK.
The former Tory leader had also campaigned for the UK to remain as part of the EU bloc.
