Employment Gold Cards

In the last two years, Taiwan has issued almost 600 Employment Gold Cards to foreign professionals. Taiwan had introduced the Act for the Recruitment and Employment of Foreign Professional Talent on 8th February 2018. Since then, Taiwan has issued almost 600 Gold Cards.

By the end of January this year, Taiwan had issued 584 Employment Gold Cards under the Act. The Act was passed to make the visa regulations easier for Taiwanese Work Permits, Insurance, Taxes, Pensions and Residency Permits for foreign professionals and their families.

An Employment Gold Card of Taiwan includes a Work Permit, Residence Visa, Alien Residence Permit and Re-entry Permit.

The Gold Card makes it easier for foreign professionals who do not have Permanent Residency to change jobs. With an Employment Gold Card, such professionals do not need to depend on their employers to sponsor their Work Permit.

As per the NDC, 318 foreign professionals obtained the Gold Card for their economic expertise accounting for 55% of all Gold Cards issued.

23% of all Employment Gold Cards went to the United States of America, making the US the largest group of recipients. Hong Kong accounted for 15%, while the UK obtained 8% of all Employment Gold Cards. Malaysia and Denmark accounted received 6% respectively of all Gold Cards, while Singapore accounted for 4%.

Other countries to receive the Employment Gold Cards are Germany, South Korea, Japan and France.

A month after the Act was passed, Taiwan issued the first Employment Gold Card to Steven Chen from the US who is the co-founder of YouTube. He was granted the Gold Card for his outstanding achievements in software development and tech innovations.

Albert Muhlbock, the Australian pianist, has also received the Employment Gold Card. He said, in an interview to CNN, that he enjoys the flexibility of working in various schools instead of being tied down to one employer.

One of the most recent Gold Cards went to Frank Hojerslev from Australia. Mr Hojerslev is the CEO of Formosa Renewable Power.
