Sweden adopts a friendlier stance towards immigrants from outside the European Union than any other country within the union.
According to the 85th edition of the Standard Eurobarometer study, 62 percent of Swedes are of the view that immigration from outside of the EU is beneficial for their country. It has the highest percentage among the 24 EU member states that were surveyed.
Conducted by the Standard Eurobarometer of the European Commission twice a year, it evaluates stances and opinions of the 28 EU Member States, five candidate countries, which include Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey, and the Turkish Cypriot community. Around 1,000 face-to-face interviews per country are conducted during the survey.
As per the latest poll conducted between 21 and 31 May 2016, 78 percent of the Swedes had a positive attitude towards overall immigration. But it stood second only to Luxembourg, which was more supporting of it at 81 percent.
Sweden continues to maintain its reputation as one of the most peaceful nations as 76 percent of them were quoted by The Local as saying that the most beneficial result of the EU is being able to promote peace among the member states, which is considerably higher than the average of 55 percent among the other union’s nations.
