President Trump recently announced that he will be offering an easier and simple pathway to US Work Visas and even Citizenship pathway to skilled immigrant workers. This is the need of the hour for the US, specifically for its Silicon Valley.
The one common factor that the majority of the start-ups in Silicon Valley share is that they are run by immigrants. 57% of the STEM Tech workers in the Bay Area are immigrants. Immigrants constitute 25% of the business founders in the US. This includes Google to Sun Microsystems to Tesla with its most notorious Twitter user of the Silicon Valley – Elon Musk.
Immigrants did not build only the first microchips in Silicon Valley. They also build them in the tech giants as they are currently known. 50% plus of the million dollar start-ups have an immigrant founder. Many of them were founded by the immigrants on US Work Visas in the H-1B stream, as quoted by the Tech Crunch.
The 50 Unicorn start-ups founded by immigrants have a total value of 248 billion USD as per the report of NAFP. They have also created an average of 1,200 US jobs individually.
One of the fundamental propellants of US success today is its immigrant workers.
Software Engineers have remained the number 1 toughest job to fill in the US for the last 10 years. US companies are ready to pay 10 to 20% higher than the market rate for Engineers and top talent.
Nevertheless, it is projected that the US will be short of 2 million Engineers by 2022. How will it lead innovation if it does not have the talent to do it?
