As Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Yemen, the Maldives and Egypt decided to break ties with Qatar on 5 June, Indian expatriates would benefit, according to experts in Kerala.
Around 650,000 Indians reside in Qatar now and of them, 300,000 are from Kerala. As nationals of Qatar would be forced to leave their jobs in these six countries, this Western Asian country would also lay off workers from those countries.
Dr S Irudaya Rajan, Chair Professor, Migration expert at the Centre for Development Studies in Thiruvananthapuram, was quoted by Reuters as saying that Indians will fill the jobs that the citizens of these six nations quit. It would be an opportunity for expatriates from India and the entire South Asia.
Dr Rajan said life and services must go on as usual and for it, fresh labour would be needed. Indians would gain in the short-term, but the long-term impact may vary, he said.
Dr K N Raghavan, CEO of the NORKA (Non-Resident Keralites’ Affairs) Department of Kerala, said they were yet to receive feedback from Keralites in Qatar until Monday evening. They did not receive any panic calls either from those planning to head to Qatar, he said.
