You do not require a work permit if you are a citizen of the EU or belong to Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Norway. You will, however, need a local commune if you wish to stay for more than 90 days. Citizens, who do not belong to the EU countries, including the UK, would have to work a permit and residence visa to work or live in Italy.

Step 1: The Italian employer often applies for a work visa at the immigration office in that particular Italian province. You must, however, provide the entire required document to your employer.
Step 2: A contract stating your residence information must be submitted. The agreement must be acknowledged and signed by your employer. This is proof that you have arranged your accommodation. The person employing you must also commit to paying for your travel expenditure in case you get terminated from the country.
Step 3: The visa application form will be downloaded, filled with relevant information, and submitted by the employee at an Italian consulate.
Step 4: The employee will be given six months to pick up the visa and enter the country if and when the application gets approved by the authorities.
Step 5: The employee must apply for a permit to stay in Italy within the first eight days of entering the country. The permit is a Permesso di soggiorno or a residence permit and can be collected from any post office.
