The idea of finding an overseas job appeals to many for a number of reasons. For some, there are career-boosting and financial benefits while others find the idea of living overseas fascinating.
The world is getting smaller day-by-day and businesses are increasingly becoming global. Finaccord, a market research company, predicts that by 2021 there would be 87.5 million expats globally.
However, finding an overseas job has its own challenges.
Read on to know the ways which can help you secure your first overseas job:
1. Internal roles:
If you already work in a multi-national company, you may look for internal roles in any of its international offices. There may already be a number of people who have made the move and you could follow in their footsteps. Your international staff could also offer you advice on Work Permit requirements and the general culture in that country.
However, there is one drawback to this route. Often, you will not be given a say in the country that you relocate to as the Company would be taking the decision for the same.
2. Picking the right country:
It is extremely important to pick the right international destination. You should ensure that the country you choose should have the right expat job market as per your needs. Your skills and work experience should be in demand in the country that you choose. You should also thoroughly research the Visa and Work Permit requirements of your chosen country.
Learning the local language will also give you an edge especially in a non-English speaking country.
3. International job boards:
Hunting for a job abroad is not very different from how you would look for a job domestically. There are a number of international job boards where you can search for a job overseas. Job sites like Monster and Indeed have their International versions where you can find overseas job positions, as per Expat News.
There are also a number of smaller websites that look for specific skill requirements. For example, Jooble is a popular website for finding jobs in developing countries. Remote Year provides programs for professionals who wish to travel while working.
4. Remote working:
Working remotely is becoming increasingly popular in today’s workspace. With the growth of the Internet and the availability of Video Calls, Emails and shared documents, workers do not need to sit together to collaborate.
If you have the right skill set, you may work remotely as a freelancer for a number of international companies. This will not only give you a flexible work-life balance but also help you discover a new culture. Not to forget, you will gain valuable contacts which may further help you land your first overseas job.
