work permit in Germany in 2020

Germany lies at the heart of Europe. Interestingly, Germany shares its borders with 9 other nations. No other European country has so many neighbors.

A viable option for those looking to work overseas, there is also an immense demand for skilled professionals in Germany.

Thinking of moving to Germany for work overseas in 2020? Let us see here as to how you can get a work permit in Germany in 2020.

What is the difference between a work permit and a work visa?

Firstly, let us begin by differentiating between a work permit and a work visa.

A visa is a document that is needed by an individual to enter a particular country. A work permit, on the other hand, is an employment letter issued by an employer to an employee that is needed by the employee for gaining entry into the country for taking up employment with the concerned employer.

Visas are issued by the immigration authorities at the immigration office. The immigration official handling the case reserves the right to either allow or deny the person’s entry into the country.

Work permits are issued by national or international companies outsourcing to various other countries for hiring professional or technical staff.

Germany is a great choice for expats looking for lucrative jobs overseas. If appropriately meeting the eligibility requirements, non-EU nationals are a much sought-after potential labour force in Germany.

Migrants, that too, high-skilled migrants, are in great demand in Germany. While there is a requirement for professionals in various fields, the occupations that have the highest demand in Germany include the fields of research, health, IT, engineering etc.

Generally, non-EU nationals require a visa for entering Germany.

Do make doubly sure that you carefully explore and assess all the options available before you decide the most appropriate German visa for you. Keep in mind that a short stay visa for Germany cannot be converted into a longer-term visa after it has been granted.

What are the common Germany permits that you can work on?

While in Germany, you can work on either of the following popular permits –

Temporary Residence Permit:

Also known as a limited residence permit, a temporary residence permit usually lets you stay in Germany for up to 1 year.

The temporary residence permit can be extended provided –

  • You continue to fulfil the requirements, and
  • There is no major change in your situation.

The temporary residence permit is the most commonly applied for a permit by foreign nationals upon arriving in Germany.

The temporary residence permit usually serves as the foundation on which an expat can build-up and submit longer-term visa applications in future.

Such permits can be granted for – employment, study, and marriage purposes.

Do keep in mind that as the temporary residence permit is usually granted on the basis of a specific purpose, that is, if the temporary residence permit granted to you is for work, you cannot study on it and vice versa.

EU Blue Card:

While similar to the temporary residence permit, the EU Blue Card differs in 2 main regards. While the temporary residence permit is general and is usually issued for 1 year, the EU Blue card targets professionals that are highly skilled and usually granted for a longer duration.

To be eligible for EU Blue Card, you must have a higher education degree – a bachelor's or master’s – and must apply only for roles corresponding with your own field of study.

Do keep in mind that a high level of proficiency in the German language is also required, along with a stipulated threshold of earnings per year.

To enter Germany, you will have to get a visa from the local German mission that has the requisite jurisdiction for handling your case.

Once in Germany, you will have to apply for a permit that will let you remain and work in Germany. The most commonly applied for work permits are the temporary residence permit and the EU Blue Card.
