US refugee ban for worldwide asylum seekers has ended. The new screening procedures will be announced shortly informed one of the officials of the State Department. US President Donald Trump had imposed a four-month ban on the arrival of refugees to the US.
The US administration is all set to reveal the stringent screening procedures for refugees even as the US refugee ban has ended. The ban was imposed through an executive order earlier this year. The ban was effective till 24 October and has not been renewed through a fresh order, as quoted by the Hindu.
US officials said that asylum seekers will now have to face tougher and extensive verification of their backgrounds. It will be in line with extreme vetting policy of Trump for migrants. The US agencies have been reviewing the screening procedures during the ban period. These include the State Department and the Homeland Security Department.
The new screening procedures for worldwide refugees seeking asylum in the US are expected any time now. The intake of refugees is expected to be far less when compared to the recent years in spite of the ban being lifted.
In September Trump had capped the intake of refugees at 45,000 per year for the fiscal year 2018 that commenced on 1 October. This was a decrease of more than 50% from the existing intake limit. Former President Obama had earlier put this cap at 110, 000 in the previous year.
The ban on the intake of refugees was apart from the extensive travel ban on immigrants from several nations imposed by Trump. The US Courts have time and again blocked the wider travel ban policy. However, they have left the refugee policy untouched.
