EU offer on UK nationals rights is restricted said the UK as the EU proposed that Britons residing in the EU after UK exit will only possess residence rights. This was revealed by David Davis, the UK Brexit Minister.
EU intends that the future privileges of the EU nationals in the UK and UK nationals in the EU get settled in the initial rounds of deliberations for the Brexit. It is only after this that it intends to progress over to future trade relations with the UK, as quoted by the Indian Express.
Revealing the EU offer on UK nationals of possessing only residence rights, David Davis informed the Committee of lawmakers from the House of Lords that EU proposed only restricted rights for UK nationals.
UK nationals are proposed to have only rights of residence in the EU in the period after UK exits from the EU. They are not offered the right of free movement within the EU similar to their rights prior to the exit. This includes right to study or work in a neighboring EU member state.
David Davis said that the offer has been questioned by the UK as being inconsistent with the principle of reciprocity. The offer also does not conform to the EU intention of safeguarding rights applicable under EU law. The UK Brexit Minister further informed that these concerns will be discussed with the EU in the future rounds of talks.
The EU on its part said that exit discussions must begin with addressing the ambiguity that will be created by Brexit. This includes lack of certainty for the rights of EU nationals in the UK and vice versa, as well as financial settlement, said an EU Spokeswoman.
