Ending chain immigration will bring in more skilled workers to the US from India and China through the merit-based system. This was revealed by the Federation for American Immigration Reform Director of Research Matthew O’Brien. FAIR is a Washington based think tank.
O’Brien said that ending chain immigration is essential as it is depriving a large number of individuals who possess proven potential and skills. On the other hand, people are being admitted to the US purely because of familial ties to an earlier US immigrant, explained the Director.
Trump’s campaign against the chain immigration to the US is not the first in the history of US. The liberal reforms as early as the 1960s also demanded a merit-based system for immigration, as quoted by the Washington Post.
The US today offers more than 1 million Green Cards annually. Around 2/3rds of these green cards are received by the family members of legal residents and US nationals.
RAISE Act bill has also been endorsed by US President Trump. This bill aims to restrict the sponsorship of US visa to the minor kinds and spouses of the US nationals. It intends to implement points based immigration system that offers priority to skilled workers, as in Canada.
The White House has launched a campaign with a slide show describing the chain immigration process. Through this process, overseas citizens first settle permanently in the US. Then, they bring in their overseas relatives to the US. These again have the chance to bring their overseas relatives to the US and this continues till the settlement of the entire extended families in the US.
US Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Francis Cissna said that the numbers are less important when it comes to chain immigration. But it is the principle that fills the pool of aspiring immigrants with candidates whose top eligibility is not a job skill but genetic.
