The EU negotiator Michel Barnier has said that the UK must demonstrate more clarity and ambition for the rights of the EU citizens in the UK after the Brexit is operational.
This statement was made by Barnier after the UK Prime Minister Theresa May announced her proposal for the rights of the EU citizens in the UK. This includes rules for the reunion with the families and new requirements for residency permits after the UK’s exit from the EU.
Barnier tweeted that the EU intends that its nationals receive the same rights and level of protection in the UK as per the EU legal framework. The UK needs to express more clarity, ambition and enhanced rights for the EU citizens than what has been announced now added Barnier.
Theresa May is already on a path of conflict with the EU after she said that the rights of the EU citizens would not be enforceable by the European Court of Justice. Earlier May released a 17-page document for policies for EU citizens defining her proposals for them including dependent family members of the EU citizens, as quoted by the New Indian Express.
However, the proposal for permitting spouses from outside the UK to arrive at the nation post-Brexit is not on par with the expectations of the EU.
Guy Verhofstadt the Brexit coordinator for the European Parliament while welcoming the proposal by May to simplify processes for residency application in the UK also added that the proposal had several limitations.
The Brexit coordinator for the European Parliament also cautioned that any deterioration of the rights associated with the freedom of movement prior to UK’s exit from the EU would contravene the laws of the EU.
