More than 2,100,000 tech professionals from India had applied for H-1B work visas in the past 11 years, a report of the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) said.
The report also disproved claims that visa applicants were not highly qualified. The visa holders’ salaries over the last 11 years averaged $92,317 and most of them held either masters or bachelor’s degrees.
Press Trust of India quoted the report as saying that beginning from 2007 until June 2017, the total number of H-1B visa applications that the USCIS had received was 3,400,000. Of these, 2,100,000 were from India alone. The same period saw the US issuing H-1B visas to 2,600,000 people, said the USCIS in its report. Most number of H-1B applications between 2007 and 2017 were filed by Indians, followed by Chinese with 296,313, the Filipinos with 85,918, South Koreans with 77,359 and Canadians with 68,228.
The report said that the majority of recipients (2,300,000) of H-1B visas belonged to the age group of 25-34 and 2,000,000 were from the IT related occupation category. After IT, architecture, engineering and surveying received the most number of visas (318,670), while administrative specialisations, education, and medicine and health received 245,000, 244,000 and 185,000 H-1B visas, respectively.
During this period, over 2,000 foreign workers aged over 65 years received H-1B visas. In 2017, 122 H-1B visas have been granted to those aged above 65 until now.
According to the report, most number of H-1B visas were received by custom computer programming services industry (999, 901) during 2007-2017, followed by computer systems design services and college universities and professional schools, which received 287,000 and 229,000 visas, respectively.
The average salaries of H-1B visa holders have increased from $68,159 in 2007 to $92,317 in 2017.
