New immigrants to Canada may not be familiar with the functioning of the Canadian Government or the companies. Below are some of the usual frauds that they must be aware of:
Individuals posing as Canadian Government Staff
Individuals may pose as Canadian Government Staff over the phone. They make calls to people and create fear in their minds by saying that you have done something erroneous and hence owe fee payment. It must be borne in mind that these are a fraudulent complaint.
Failure to make immediate payment could result in loss of immigration status or deportation claim such fake people posing as Government officers.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada will never communicate over the telephone for payment of fees or fines. It will never be aggressive or threaten you with deportation or arrest. It will also never hurry you for immediate payment or send police for arresting for unpaid fees.
Bogus Emails
New immigrants may receive fake emails that persuade for investing money or share personal data or passwords associated with banking accounts.
Delete such emails. Do not click on any links that the email has or share any personal information.
Genuine investors do not send emails in bulk to unknown individuals.
Sham computer virus
You may receive an email or phone call saying that your computer has been infected by a virus. The sender/caller will offer you removal of virus from your computer. You will be asked to share your computer passwords and other personal data, as quoted by the Canada CA.
Do not offer access to your computer to anybody whom you have not contacted for assistance. You must avail professional assistance or utilize software for such issues procured from a trusted store.
Fake prizes
You may receive a text message or phone call informing you that you have won something though you did not participate in a contest. It is likely that this is a scam and they will share fraudulent documents with you.
When you receive a text message from unknown people directing you to a form that seeks personal information, delete such texts. Do not share any personal data.
