The PTE Repeat Sentence task is not as straightforward as it appears. This task generally contains more than 7 words. The aim of the task is to test your pronunciation, fluency and memory capacity.

If you are planning to study or migrate overseas, following tips will help you improve your memory and pronunciation skills for PTE.

Tips for pronunciation and fluency:

Fluency and pronunciation are the most important skills for the PTE Repeat Sentence task. Students tend to blend words together as they think this denotes fluency in English. Unfortunately, the PTE evaluators are looking for good enunciation. Naturally, the ‘blending’ trick does not go down well with them.

Here are some tips for practicing pronunciation and fluency:

  • Listen to audio book, podcast, radio show in English every day
  • Listen to a native speaker and pay special attention to their accentuation, speed and rhythm
  • Watch Ted Talks you find interest in. Download transcripts and make note of words you don’t know how to pronounce.
  • Get a speaking partner. If possible, set up meetings with a native speaker, either online or in person.

The Times of India suggests taking mock tests that help you score you on your pronunciation and fluency.

Tips for improving memory:

Your capacity for memorization decides your chance of succeeding at the PTE Repeat Sentence task. Many people take notes while they listen, thinking this would work. However, there isn’t enough time to record the entire sentence precisely.

Here are some advisable tips to help you get started:

  • Start playing memory games to develop your short-term memory. This will help you take in more information and keep it in your mind for long.
  • Chunk words together as you listen. Suppose the sentence you hear is - “Last month I was told to do something”. You can group the words into phrases like - “Last month”, “I was told”, “Do something”. This practice makes it easier to remember the sentence accurately.
  • Lastly, practice a lot. The more you practice, the better you get at it.
