What is the difference between 186 and 187 Visas

  • If you are applying for a Subclass 186 Visa or a Subclass 187 Visa, you must meet the English, age and skill requirements unless you are exempt.
  • Applicants can be in or outside Australia when they apply for this visa.
  • Both 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme) visas and 187 visas (Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme) are similar, and both visas require employment sponsorship.
  • 187 visa requires the applicant to live in designated regional areas like Western Australia, South Australia, the ACT, Tasmania and the Northern Territory for two years.
  • There are no geographical restrictions for 186 visas.

The Subclass 186 visa and Subclass 187 visa are demand-orientated programs, and these two visas allow employers to select skilled workers for Australian permanent residence to fill the vacant positions in their business. The Subclass 186 visa is available nationally, and the Subclass 187 visa is for workers seeking to work in regional Australia.

What is Subclass 186?

Visa subclass 186 is an Employer employer-sponsored visa; here, applicants are selected by sponsored employers to work in Australian states or territories. The applicant should be less than 45 years of age to apply for subclass 186.

Subclass 186 visas, also known as Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visas are permanent residency visas for skilled workers. This visa is available for temporary residents who are already living and working in Australia, and for those living outside Australia. This visa provides Australian permanent residency to the holder without any conditions.

What is Subclass 187?

Foreign skilled workers who are selected by an Australian employer in regional Australia can apply for Australian permanent residence under a subclass 187 visa. This Subclass 187 visa requires the applicant to complete a skills assessment. The applicant can apply for this visa while being inside or outside Australia.

There are two streams to apply the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme visa (Subclass 187)

  • Direct Entry stream
  • Temporary Residence Transition stream
