India takes top spot among new immigrants to Canada

Abstract: Indians make up most of the foreign nationals migrating to Canada. India is the primary country contributing to foreign nationals migrating to Canada, as per the 2021 census of Canada. India had the top position as the prime place of birth for newcomers to Canada. Around 18.6% of new migrants to Canada in the period 2016 to 2021 were born in India. The data published in the report titled 'Portrait of Immigration to Canada' by Statistics Canada demonstrates that 1 in 5 immigrants in Canada is from India.

More Immigrants to Canada

In 2021, over 8.3 million people, or close to 23 percent of the population were either people who were issued Canada PR or permanent residency or new immigrants. It has been the highest number of immigrants in the population of Canada since the country was formed in 1867.

Most of the immigrants residing in Canada were welcomed through the economic programs. Of the total of 748,120 immigrants coming to the country through economic programs, more than 1/3rd  or 34.5 percent were invited under FSWP or Federal Skilled Worker Program and the other 1/3rd or 33.6 percent were invited under PNP or Provincial Nominee Program.

New Targets for Welcoming Immigrants

The government of Canada plans to announce a new Immigration Levels Plan for the next year on November 1, 2022. The immigrants will be welcomed through these 3 divisions:

  • Economic class
  • Family class
  • Humanitarian programs
