India–Austria Working Holiday Programme

The Austria Working Holiday Programme for Indians is based on a Joint Declaration signed between the Governments of India and Austria. It forms part of the wider India–Austria migration and mobility cooperation. The programme is a reciprocal youth-exchange arrangement. It allows young people from each country to holiday in the other and take up temporary work to support their stay.

Austria runs Working Holiday Programmes with 12 partners: Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Chinese Taipei, and the USA. Under the Joint Declaration, Austria issues up to 200 visas a year to Indian participants. Places are limited, so applying early with a complete file is important.

The programme is a holiday and cultural-exchange visa, not a work visa or a migration route. Work and study are allowed, but your main purpose must be to holiday in Austria. Y-Axis helps young Indians check their eligibility, prepare a strong application, and plan their stay in Austria.

How can I get a Permanent Residency in Austria?

Working and Studying in Austria on a Working Holiday Visa

You can work in Austria for up to 6 months in total during your 12-month stay. You do not need a separate work permit. You can work for one employer or several, as long as your total work time stays within 6 months. Work is meant to help fund your holiday, so it must remain secondary to your travel.

When you work, Austrian employment law, collective agreements, and social security rules apply in full. This means you receive the same legal protection as local workers. Jobs in regulated professions, such as healthcare, still need the required qualifications and registration.

Sector Typical Temporary Roles
Winter Tourism Ski resort staff, hotel reception, chalet and housekeeping roles
Summer Tourism Hotel, lake resort, and mountain hut staff
Hospitality Restaurant service, kitchen assistance, café roles
Events and Culture Festival, event, and visitor service roles
Agriculture Seasonal harvest work, including vineyard roles
Retail Shop assistants in cities and tourist areas

Note:  Basic German greatly improves your chances, especially outside Vienna. Plan your funds so you can cover your stay even if you do not find work quickly.

Studying During Your Stay

You can join study or educational courses for up to 12 months. Many participants use this time to learn German, which helps with daily life and future career plans in German-speaking countries. However, study must stay incidental. Your main reason for the visit must remain holiday and cultural exchange.

plus
No. You do not need a job offer or employer sponsorship to apply. The visa is designed for holiday and cultural exchange. You may look for temporary work after you arrive in Austria. This makes the visa easier to apply for than an employer-sponsored work visa, but work is not guaranteed.
How long can I work in Austria on a Working Holiday Visa?
plus
You can work for up to 6 months in total during your 12-month stay. You can work for one employer or several, as long as the total stays within 6 months. You do not need a separate work permit. Austrian employment law, collective agreements, and social security rules apply to your work in full.
Can I study in Austria on a Working Holiday Visa?
plus
Yes. You can join study or educational courses for up to 12 months, such as German language classes. However, study must remain secondary to your holiday. Your main reason for visiting Austria must be holiday and cultural exchange. Many participants use their stay to learn German, which helps with daily life and jobs.
What is the age limit for the Austria Working Holiday Visa?
plus
You must be aged 18 to 30 years, both inclusive, on the date of application. This means you must lodge your application before your 31st birthday. If you turn 31 after applying, your application can still be considered. Plan your application early if you are close to the upper age limit.
Do I need a degree to apply for the Austria Working Holiday Visa?
plus
No. The India–Austria Joint Declaration does not set any education requirement. You do not need a bachelor’s degree, unlike the UK-India Young Professionals Scheme. This makes the visa a good option for students, recent graduates, and young professionals. However, regulated jobs in Austria still need the right qualifications and registration.
Do I need to speak German for the Austria Working Holiday Visa?
plus
No German language requirement has been set for the visa. You can complete your application in English. However, basic German greatly helps with daily life and with finding temporary jobs, especially outside Vienna. Many applicants take German classes before or during their stay to improve their experience and job chances.
How much money do I need for the Austria Working Holiday Visa?
plus

What health insurance do I need for the Austria Working Holiday Visa?
plus
You need health insurance that covers all risks and is valid in Austria for your entire stay. The policy must be in place before you enter Austria. It should cover medical treatment, accidents, and repatriation. The Embassy is understood to expect minimum cover of EUR 30,000. Check the current requirement before you buy a policy.
Where do I apply for the Austria Working Holiday Visa in India?
plus
You apply in person, by appointment, at the Embassy of Austria in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. Applications may also be made at other Austrian consular posts specifically authorised for this purpose. You cannot apply from inside Austria. If you live outside Delhi, plan your travel so that one visit is enough.
How early should I apply for the Austria Working Holiday Visa?
plus
You can apply up to 6 months before your planned start date. You should apply at least 3 weeks before you travel. Because there are only 200 places a year, applying early is strongly recommended. Allow 2 to 4 weeks to prepare your documents with Y-Axis before your Embassy appointment.
Can I bring my family on an Austria Working Holiday Visa?
plus
No. Applicants must not be accompanied by dependent family members, such as a spouse or children. The Working Holiday Visa is designed for individuals who want to travel and experience Austrian life on their own. If you plan to move with family, other Austrian visa routes may be more suitable.
Can I apply for the Austria Working Holiday Visa more than once?
plus
No. You can take part in the Austria Working Holiday Programme only once. If you have already completed a working holiday stay in Austria, you cannot apply again. Because of this once-only rule, plan your trip carefully so you make the most of your 12 months in Austria.
Can I apply if I have a criminal record?
plus
No. You must not have been convicted of a criminal offence to qualify. You must also meet Austrian health and character requirements. The Embassy may ask for a Police Clearance Certificate, which you can obtain through Passport Seva. Any criminal conviction disqualifies you from the programme.
Can I extend the Austria Working Holiday Visa or apply for PR?
plus
The Austria Working Holiday Visa cannot normally be extended. It is a fixed-term national visa and does not lead to permanent residence. It is designed for holiday and cultural exchange, not migration. If you want to work in Europe long term, Y-Axis can assess you for other options, such as the Germany Opportunity Card.
Can I travel to other European countries on this visa?
plus
Yes. As an Austrian Visa D holder, you can travel to other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Austria must remain your base during your stay. This lets you explore popular destinations such as Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and France while living in Austria.
What is the Meldezettel in Austria?
plus
The Meldezettel is Austria’s mandatory address registration. You must register your address at the local registration office within 3 days of moving into your accommodation. Registration is needed for many everyday tasks, such as opening a bank account. Y-Axis covers this in its pre-departure orientation session.
How much does the Y-Axis Austria Working Holiday Visa service cost?
plus
The Y-Axis service costs ₹25,000 plus applicable taxes. It includes case assessment, document review, a cover letter, appointment guidance, and a mock interview. If the Austrian Embassy refuses your visa, Y-Axis refunds ₹5,000, subject to refund conditions. Government fees, insurance, and travel costs are separate.
