Minimum Necessary Income (MNI)

The candidate needs to have enough funds to sponsor, which is called Minimum Necessary Income (MNI). The MNI is a key factor for the eligibility of PGP. This will be provided only after expressing an interest in sponsorship using the online form.

The applicants who received the invite to apply after selection but did not satisfy the MNI as one of the requirements, then their application will get refused.

The sponsors across the provinces of Canada except for Quebec are invited to apply. The co-signers of the sponsors need to submit Notices of Assessment from the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) for three taxation years immediately after the date of their application.

Determination of Family size

The interested potential sponsors have to determine the family size to confirm that they need to qualify for the (MNI) Minimum Necessary Income as one of the mandatory requirements. The size of the family must include all the member details, for whom the sponsor is financially responsible once they become sponsors.

The family size can include:

  • the interested potential sponsor
  • their common-law partner or spouse
  • the sponsor’s dependent children
  • the partner’s or spouse’s dependent children;
  • any person who has got sponsorship in the past from the interested sponsor and is still financially responsible
  • the parents and grandparents they are willing to sponsor including their dependents
  • Dependent children who are not willing to enter Canada along with their parents or grandparents;
  • The interested sponsor parent or grandparent’s partner or spouse even if they are not coming to Canada
  • The interested sponsor parent or grandparents’ spouse who is separated.

Note: Many of the citizens have seen losses in income during the pandemic. Hence IRCC is planning to lower the thresholds of MNI for the 2020 and 2021 calendar years by 30%. IRCC is also counting and supporting the Employment Insurance benefits and the temporary COVID-19 benefits under the sponsor’s income.

How do Sponsor parents and Grandparents, if living in Quebec?

Canadians who are willing to sponsor his/her parents or grandparents and the sponsors living in Quebec have to meet the MNI threshold that is evaluated by Quebec’s immigration ministry. This is based on Quebec’s income requirement.

To be an interested sponsor living in Quebec, one has to submit a signed undertaking to both IRCC and Quebec government. This should clearly indicate the length of sponsorship and responsibility that the sponsor can provide to the family members.

Provided the sponsor should be a permanent resident of Canada and their sponsorship is counted from the next day after they become PR.

Usually, the duration of undertaking the Parents and Grandparents is for 20 years for all Canadian except for Quebec. For Quebec residents, this length of the commitment is for 10 years.

Super Visa for Parents and Grandparents

A 10-year valid Super Visa is also available for the Parents and Grandparents of Canadians, provided you should be eligible. This visa permits the holders to remain in Canada as a tourist for 5-years without even renewing the documents.
