Significant reforms to Parents and Grandparents Super Visa: Effective from July 4, 2022

  • Canada has increased the period to stay for Super Visa holders to five years each year.
  • Currently, the Super Visa holders have a possibility of extending their stay up to two years while residing in Canada. The Super Visa holders staying in Canada can stay for up to seven straight years after extending.
  • Medical insurance companies will be requested to cover the Super Visa applicants very soon in the near future. Canada’s Immigration Minister does this designating authority.
  • Currently, the Super Visa holders are allowed to stay for up to two years per entry in Canada. This is a multi-entry visa that is valid for up to 10 years.
  • Super Visa applicants were currently able to receive medical coverage from Canadian insurance providers only. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizens Canada (IRCC) claimed to give further details later.
  • These reforms were proposed and supported by all the political parties in Canada.
  • Around 17,000 Super Visas are issued per year by Canada.
  • Super Visa has been provided as an alternative for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) for the last ten years. The PGP program offers permanent residence as it was trendy, and the demand for sponsoring the parents always exceeded the number of available spots.
  • If the IRCC received around 200,000 sponsor requests for a given period, the available immigration spots were only 20,000. For this reason, IRCC has opened expression of interest windows temporarily for the PGP and then held lotteries to extend requests to apply for permanent residency under the PGP.

  • The candidates who pass a medical examination and proof of private health insurance from an authorized and approved insurance provider can also acquire Super Visa. This is done to get emergency health care in Canada without the costs being paid for by Canadian taxpayers. Provided that the host children or the grandchildren must satisfy the IRCC’s minimum income requirements.
  • The enrichments to the super visa program allow family members to be reconciled for a more extended period in Canada.
