The Govt. of Canada says that the number of people obtaining Canadian Citizenship is on the rise due to revised rules. The Canadian Citizenship Act was amended on 11th October 2017.
Amendments to the Canadian Citizenship (PR) Requirements reduced the number of days a PR was required to be physically present in Canada. Post the changes, IRCC estimates that 152,000 people would have received their Canadian citizenship.
Earlier, Permanent Residents had to be present for 4 years out of the recent 6 in Canada to be eligible for citizenship. The duration was reduced to 3 years out of the recent 5 years on 11th October 2017.
In the 12 months succeeding the citizenship changes, there was a 40% increase in the number of Canadian citizenships. Applications for citizenship also hiked to 242,680 in the nine months after the change. This was a 130% increase over the number of citizenship applications received for the year 2016-17.
There were other amendments too made to the legislation known as Bill C-6. Applicants who had stayed in Canada as a temporary resident or as a protected individual could claim 365 days towards their 3 years requirement. However, each day spent in Canada would be counted as a half-day.
Knowledge and language requirements were earlier mandatory for applicants between 14 and 64 years of age. This has now been changed to 18 and 54 years of age.
CIC News quoted Canadian Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen saying that the changes to Canadian Citizenship rules are having the effect they desired. He marked the week between 8th and 14th of October as Citizenship Week. The Govt. of Canada has made important changes to the Citizen Act of Canada under Bill C-6. The changes have provided greater flexibility to those wishing to become Canadian citizens, added Hussen.
