Sweden Medical Treatment Visa

A Sweden Medical Treatment Visa allows foreign nationals to enter the country for medical treatment. The visa enables sick people from non-EU countries to treat their medical conditions in a Swedish medical center for urgent healthcare reasons. Proof of medical treatment and a doctor's report may be requested during the visa application process. The patient can stay in Sweden for up to 90 days within 180 days with a medical treatment visa. Although these are usually issued as a single-entry type, in some instances, you can apply for the double-entry or multiple-entry types as well. If the treatment takes over 90 days, the applicant must apply for a national visa instead (D category).

The Sweden Medical Treatment visa (TYPE C) is a short-term visa that allows an applicant to visit the country for medical conditions. It doesn't allow an applicant to work in the country.

The Swedish public health system offers excellent care to patients and easily provides access to prescription drugs, preventive services, disability support, rehabilitation services, and dental care. Foreigners who travel to the country for medical emergencies can also use the Public health system. Sweden is ranked as one of the best healthcare systems in the world, ranked 23rd among 191 national healthcare systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the Schengen medical treatment visa allow an applicant to take treatment in Sweden?
plus

Yes, a Schengen medical treatment visa is the same as a Sweden medical treatment visa. A Schengen visa is a common visa issued by countries in the Schengen Area, including Sweden.

Can I get a Schengen Medical Treatment Visa extension?
plus

In some instances, you can extend your medical treatment visa.  However, there are certain factors based on which the visa can be extended, such as:

  • If the patient cannot leave/travel outside the country, it will put their life at risk.
  • The medical treatment the patient is receiving must be continued to survive and get fit.

If the patient's life is not risky if they leave the current medical treatment, then the country authorities will not extend the Sweden Medical treatment visa. Instead, they will ask you to seek further medical assistance from the country after 90 days or to apply for a national medical treatment visa in the respective country.

When can I get a Sweden Medical Treatment visa?
plus

The processing time for all Schengen visas is around 15 days. Although, depending on the applicant's health, you may be able to acquire your visa sooner. You must give proof as quickly as possible that you require a Schengen Medical visa. Similarly, you can apply for a Schengen visa 3 months in advance and 2 weeks before you want to go. In exceptional circumstances, Schengen country embassies will process a medical treatment visa application even if it is submitted more than 2 weeks later.

How long can an applicant stay with a Sweden Medical Treatment visa?
plus

A Swedish medical visa is valid for up to 90 days in six months. You can extend the Sweden Medical Treatment visa to receive treatment in the Schengen zone for an extended period. You should apply for a long-stay National Visa for Medical Treatment in the corresponding nation.

Is medical treatment free in Sweden for a Sweden Medical Treatment visa?
plus

No, the medical treatment is not free for everyone. However, there are some conditions, such as children, asylum seekers, and people with health conditions. Applicants who arrived outside of the EU/EEA or Switzerland will be required to pay the full cost themselves if they need healthcare services in Sweden.
