As per a January 11, 2021 announcement by the Canadian government, the invitation process for the 2020 Parents and Grandparents Program [PGP] has been completed.

According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada [IRCC], “All interested potential sponsors who were randomly selected to apply for the 2020 program have been sent invitations.”

For the 2020 PGP, IRCC will be accepting “10,000 complete applications”. In order to get up to 10,000 applications, more than 10,000 potential sponsors will be invited to apply for 2020 PGP by IRCC.

The 2020 PGP applications have been sent out between January 5 to 11, 2021.

Those invited to apply can expect their application package from IRCC within 60 days from the date of their invitation. The deadline for applying would be clearly mentioned on their invitation to apply.

Potential sponsors that are unable to get their supporting documentation due to coronavirus-related service disruptions and cannot submit their application within the allotted 60 days will be required to include proof and/or an explanation for the same.

If, however, they still don’t have the documentation even after 60 days, they will be given a 90-day extension. The required documentation in such situations would have to then be sent in as soon as possible.

The invitation status can be checked through the IRCC online tool with the “confirmation number” emailed to the individual following the submission of the interest to sponsor form.

The interest to sponsor form had been made available by IRCC from October 13 to November 3, 2020. The lottery for the same, however, had been delayed. Later, the 2020 PGP lottery was held in early-2021 as expected.

For the 2021 Parents and Grandparents Program, IRCC will be conducting “a new interest to sponsor form intake process and accept a maximum of 30,000 new applications”.

Allowing a stay in Canada for up to 2 years at a time, the Super Visa of Canada is another pathway for bringing parents and grandparents to Canada.
