As per an official notice dated October 13, 2020 by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada [IRCC], the “interest to sponsor” forms for 2020 Parents and Grandparents Program [PGP] are now available.
The interest to sponsor form will be available on the IRCC website between 12 pm EDT on October 13 and 12 pm EST on November 3, 2020.
The interest to sponsor application is not an application as such. It is only a way of informing IRCC that the individual is interested in sponsoring their parents or grandparents through the PGP of Canada.
A potential sponsor must meet all the sponsorship eligibility requirements – including the minimum necessary income requirements – before they submit an interest to sponsor form.
The sponsor, and their co-signer, if applicable, will be required to prove that they have the required income to support the individuals that they would be financially responsible for if they sponsored them. The sponsor themselves will be included for the purposes of required income assessment for the PGP.
Following a review of all the PGP 2020 submissions, and after removing all duplicate submissions, IRCC will be randomly selecting 10,000 potential sponsors. Those selected by IRCC will be invited through email to submit an application.
It is upon receiving an invitation to apply that the individual will be required to provide proof that they do meet the income requirements.
As the Parents and Grandparents Program has opened later than usual this year, the selected sponsors will be invited to apply for the PGP 2020 towards the end of the year. With applications expected to be received by IRCC in early 2021, assessment of the sponsors will be for their income for tax years 2020, 2019, and 2018.
If an applicant is issued an invitation to apply to the PGP 2020, they will be required to submit a completed sponsorship application, along with the required application fees, within 60 days.
Those applying from Quebec will be required to obtain a Quebec Selection Certificate from the government of Quebec, submitting the document to IRCC as part of their application.
