Parents and grandparents immigration lottery in early 2021

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada [IRCC] will be holding the Parents and Grandparents Program [PGP] 2020 immigration lottery in early 2021.

The PGP, a pathway under Canada immigration, specifically targets parents and grandparents.

How does Canada’s Parents and Grandparents Program work?

The PGP opens once a year. Allows citizens and permanent residents of Canada to sponsor their parents and grandparents to come to Canada. 10,000 applications to be processed as part of the 2020 PGP intake 30,000 new applications to be accepted as part of 2021 PGP intake.

Step-wise process [the form is now closed]  STEP 1: Submission of “interest to sponsor” form, provided eligible to become a sponsor. The form is to be made available by IRCC as per the application window for the intake. STEP 2: After the closing of the online form, review of the form submissions takes place. Any duplicate submissions are removed. Following a random selection of potential sponsors, invitations sent for sponsoring their parents and grandparents. Invitations are emailed. The invitation status will be posted on the IRCC website. As of now, IRCC has not “invited anyone yet in 2020”. STEP 3: If invited to apply, the application package is to be submitted as per the deadline mentioned. The completed sponsorship application is to be submitted to IRCC within 60 days. The exact deadline will be mentioned in the specific invitation to apply issued.

Previously, IRCC had planned on inviting sponsors to “apply near the end of the year” so that IRCC could “expect to get applications in early 2021 [likely January and February]”.

However, as per reports, the lottery had been re-scheduled for early 2021. The IRCC website is being updated in order to reflect the change.

The PGP 2020 expression of interest had been opened to potential sponsors between October 13 and November 3, 2020. While the randomized lottery – inviting up to 10,000 sponsors – was to be held subsequently, the same has been pushed back to early next year.

Canada’s SUPER VISA program is another route to Canada immigration for bringing parents and grandparents to the country.

A renewable visa, the Super Visa of Canada is valid for 10 years.
