As per studies, there will be a scarcity of three million workers in Germany by 2030. The cause behind it is the increase in the aging population and the declining birth rate.
Specific sectors are already facing a shortage of skilled workers. Firms, particularly in southern and eastern Germany, face a shortage of workers in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and health sectors.
Studies show that of the 801 professions, 352 of them face shortages of skills. These are in the following occupations.
According to a study, workforce shortages hurt about 30% of German businesses immediately after the pandemic. With this, businesses in Germany will be in a position to hire talented people from abroad who have acquired the necessary vocational training, which involves a minimum of two years of experience. Earlier, if a company needed to hire such personnel, the particular occupation needed to be on a list of shortages of occupations. Skilled workers were not in a position to enter Germany, and employers were, therefore, not able to recruit them.

The top five sectors with the scarcity of skilled workers in 2022 are the following:
Healthcare professionals
In the future, Germany will face a scarcity of medical personnel. Germany provides a license to both EU and non-EU candidates to practice in Germany. Applicants with an international degree in medicine can get a license to practice in the US. Their course needs to be, however, equivalent to the medical qualification that German municipal authorities require.
Engineering professionals
Those with a university degree in one of these engineering disciplines will have a lot of scope for getting jobs in Germany.
Mathematics, Information Technology, Natural Sciences, and Technology (MINT)
There will be any number of job openings for degree holders in mathematics, information technology, natural sciences, and technology.
In the field of information technology (IT), there were 124,000 job openings. The shortage has increased by more than 100% in the last two years. This trend is expected to continue for some time to come.
Skill scarcity in non-specialized areas Germany is all set to face a shortage of skills in areas where specialty degrees are not required in sectors such as industrial mechanics, retail sales, and healthcare.
Retail salespeople: Skilled retail salespersons and sales personnel will be in high demand.
Healthcare professionals: Professionals in healthcare, such as emergency medical services, obstetrics, and caring for the aged, will all be sought-after.
According to a German study, 230,000 teachers and 300,000 nursing professionals will be recruited in nursing homes, clinics, and daycare facilities shortly.
As per the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (CEDEFOP) research, talents in engineering, healthcare, teaching, and business will be needed in large numbers. Experts in these disciplines are expected to make up 25% of professions. Technicians are expected to comprise 17% of openings, while clerical support personnel will make up 14%.
Job growth is expected for farming and allied fields in the next ten years. Jobs in the services segment, like personnel in administrative and financial services, will grow in Germany.
The research further states that the real estate and telecom sectors will see an increase in a lot of jobs. Health care and retail sectors too will see significant growth.
Besides workers in personal care and sales care, personnel in administration and business will generate more job openings.
