Restrictions for international student dependents in UK

The UK witnessed an eightfold increase in the number of family members accompanying international students. According to the recent data for immigration, approximately 5 lakh international students were issued study visas in 2022. They were accompanied by 135,788 immediate family members, such as spouses and children. The number of dependents arriving in the UK in 2019 was 16,047.

India was the largest source of students in 2022, with around 161,000 arriving in the UK to study. It included 33,240 dependents.

International students who are pursuing science, engineering, and mathematics can bring their dependents to the UK. The revision in rules will allow dependents pursuing "high-value" degrees, such as post-graduate and doctoral study programs to accompany the primary candidate.

The UK authorities plan to reduce the duration for international students to stay in the UK after completing their study program.
