Parent visa applications by Indians in Australia rise by 30%

A rise of nearly 30 percent is observed in the parent visa applications by Indian-Australians in past 12 months. As India is battling with COVID-19, Indian-Australians want to bring their parents permanently to Australia.

The travel restrictions in Australia remains unchanged. Indian-Australians are showing profound interest in contributory parent visa, despite of its high price.

According to the data given by the Department of Home Affairs, and the official statistics shows a steady increase in the parent visa applications by Indian-Australians from past three years. During the period January-May 2021, Indian-Australians lodged 1,362 parent visa applications; where as in 2020, they lodged 1,049 applications.

Year Number of parent visa applications
2018 (January-May) 671
2019 (January-May) 662
2020 (January-May) 1049
2021 (January-May) 1362

There is a rise in the number of parent visa applications filed by the Indian community in Australia.

The inquiries related to contributory parent visa has a rise compared to the previous years. This is because India is hit by variant strains of Coronavirus.

In past times, the parents of Indian-Australians used to come through temporary visas like a tourist or sponsored. Still, now it is harder for them to apply for temporary visas because of Covid travel restrictions. This is the main reason for the rise in the number of parent visa applications by Indian-Australians.

Permanent residency to parents

Under two categories, Australia offers permanent residency to parents of Indians who got settled in Australia. These include:

  • Contributory Parent Visa Subclass 143
  • Non-contributory Aged Parent Visa Subclass 804

Most of the Indian migrants with Australian citizenship wish to have their parents with them as their families are parted because of their settlement in Australia. As per the Migration Act 1958, a complete family includes a spouse/de-facto partner and children of an Australian citizen or permanent resident. But parents are not included in the definition of family as per the Act.

The Migration Act 1958 has become a pet peeve for many migrant communities in Australia, including the Indian community. To overcome this, Australia offered permanent residency to parents for all the migrant communities.

The processing of parent visa applications takes 64 months if they meet all the criteria. But for aged parent visa application, it might take longer duration.

According to the Department of Home Affairs website, the Contributory Parent visa applications that meet all eligibility criteria have a timeframe of at least 64 months for processing.

The demand for parent visa applications has become an upward trending in recent years. The number has exceeded the places available in the annual Migration Program.

The Australian Government is reviewing all the settings in parent visa applications with equity to minimize the challenges and adverse effects posed by COVID-19, which impacts both the applicants and holders.
