New updates in citizenship laws for German immigrants

The German government has brought a new citizenship law for immigrants to become a citizen of Germany. The cabinet ad reduced some citizenship rules to attract more immigrants to Germany to overcome the labour shortage in the country.

 

One of the major steps taken by Germany’s cabinet is to reduce the amount of time that immigrants should stay in Germany is reduced to 5 years from 8 years. And in some cases, it is reduced to 3 years for applicants who are fluent in German language.

 

Berlin expects more skilled professionals to immigrate and to position itself in the list of top destinations for international talent or equivalent to Canada and the USA.

 

The main changes in the citizenship laws

The few main changes in the citizenship laws by Germany’s cabinet are listed below:

  • Candidates who are legally residing in Germany will have to stay a minimum of 5 years to apply for German citizenship. In some cases, the time period can be reduced to 3 years.
  • Children born in Germany get German citizenship even if one of their parents has been residing in Germany legally for a minimum 5 years.
  • Candidates above the age of 67 years will have to attend only an oral German language exam instead of a written exam.
     

Germany on Multiple Citizenship

The Federal Statistics Office of Germany announced that 2.9 million Germans currently reside in the country with multiple citizenships.

 

A residence title is required if any candidate wants to immigrate to Germany from a non-EU country. The title is generally based on the purpose of the candidate’s residence in Germany. If the candidates have a residence title, they are allowed to work in Germany unless any law prohibits it.
