Germany’s Federal Minister of Labour, Hubertus Heil, on a visit to India for the G20 labour ministers meeting, and he promoted the immigration of skilled professionals to Germany. During his visit, Minister Heil is engaging in discussions with his Indian counterparts and other stakeholders, to find solutions to improve working conditions for workers.

Minister Heil recognizes India as a significant partner for Germany, and he promotes the importance of cooperation between the two countries. The discussions during the G20 meeting are centered on achieving cross-national comparability and recognition of qualifications, particularly for specialists within the G20.

In addition to his official engagements, Minister Heil is also visiting India to explore the potential for skilled workers and to promote Germany immigration as it is an attractive destination with excellent working and living conditions.

India and Germany have been collaborating in recruiting skilled professionals, and they believe this move should benefit both countries while avoiding any impact, such as brain drain. The German Society and the German Federal Employment Agency and for International Cooperation have been actively recruiting nurses from India’s Kerala state since 2022.

In February 2023, the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, expressed Germany’s intention to simplify work visa rules for Indian IT experts, addressing the high demand for software development expertise. The plan includes modernizing the visa-issuing process and relaxing other rules to make Germany a more appealing destination for skilled Indian IT workers.

Germany has passed a new law to ease the entry of skilled workers from third countries. The law, set to be implemented on 1st March 2024, promises more streamlined and facilitated rules for third-country workers to visit Germany for work.
