Australian Citizenship

As per an official Media Release dated November 18, 2020, citizenship testing and appointments have been resumed across Australia, in all states and territories.

The announcement to the effect has been made by the Acting Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs Alan Tudge.

Recently, the Australian citizenship test has been updated, with an added focus on Australian values. The updated citizenship test was announced on September 17, marking the Australian Citizenship Day.

With Australian citizenship testing as well as appointments being resumed, more individuals will now have the opportunity of becoming the citizens of Australia. Citizenship testing and appointments for the same are now available in all Australian states as well as territories following COVID-19 shutdowns.

With the easing of COVID-19 restrictions in the state of Victoria, in-person citizenship tests and appointments have been resumed in Melbourne this week.

Moreover, as per the Media Release, “Testing has progressively resumed in other states and territories as COVID-19 restrictions have allowed.”

Currently, 117,000 individuals are awaiting an appointment throughout Australia. Of these, around 40% are in Victoria alone.

While the combined Sydney sites are the largest testing centre, Melbourne comes in as the second largest.

Since the resumption of Australian citizenship testing in July 2020, over 30,000 tests have been administered so far.

Even with the restrictions in view of the coronavirus pandemic, more than 90,000 individuals – from every state and territory in Australia – have become the citizens of Australia in online ceremonies held since March 31, 2020.

As on October 31, 2020, an additional 14,000 had been granted Australian citizenship through in-person ceremonies that have been resumed in June 2020.

While the processing of Australian citizenship applications continued even during the coronavirus pandemic, the pandemic situation has, nonetheless, led to an increase in the number of individuals in line for becoming Australian citizens.

In order to finalize as many applications and in as short a time as possible, the Australian government is providing added resources as well as increasing the opening hours at major locations.
