Job vacancies and job vacancy rate continue to increase in Canada

In Canada, job vacancies as well as job vacancy rates are on the upswing.

As per the Job Vacancy and Wage Survey [JVWS], “There were 553,500 job vacancies in the first quarter of 2021, up by 40,700 (+7.9%) from the same quarter one year earlier and by 47,300 (+9.4%) compared with two years earlier.”

The Job Vacancy and Wage Survey [JVWS] provides comprehensive data on job vacancies and wages, per industrial sector and occupations as on National Occupational Classification [NOC] matrix for Canada. Details on job vacancies, along with the offered wage data, are released quarterly. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a suspension of data collection for the JVWS for the third and fourth quarters of 2020. The next job vacancy data from the JVWS for the second quarter of 2021 is scheduled to be released on September 21, 2021.

In Canada, public health restrictions in view of the COVID-19 pandemic have been eased in a number of provinces, which include – Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, and Manitoba.

Job vacancies in the construction sector also reached an all-time high. Almost two-thirds of the increase was for specialty trade contractors.

When compared to the data for Q1 2020, Quebec was the largest contributor to the increase in the job vacancies in the construction industry.

There were also a record number of job vacancies in professional, scientific and technical services.

Quebec recorded the largest year-over-year increase in job vacancies. Among the regions in Quebec, Côte-Nord/Nord-du-Québec had the highest job vacancy rate of all, followed by Capitale-Nationale, Laurentides, and Outaouais.
