Updated January 10 2024

Canada announced New NOC Code system, and is implemented from November 16, 2022. As per the system, the NOC 2016 of 0, A, B, C, D five categories were changed to 6 categories NOC 2021 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

NOC here stands for National Occupational Classification [NOC].

The NOC is used by the Government of Canada for the purposes of classifying occupational information based on statistical surveys.

Each of the occupations are classified into a unique 4-digit code, referred to as the NOC Code for that particular occupation.

The NOC is used by Canada for various programs and services – such as Canada immigration, work overseas in Canada, job searches and labour market information.

It is through the NOC that compilation, analysis as well as communication pertaining to occupations can easily be conducted.

The National Occupational Classification 2011, also commonly referred to as the NOC 2011, is “a four-tiered hierarchical arrangement of occupational groups”. While there are 10 broad occupational categories, there are 40 major groups, 140 minor groups, and 500 unit groups.

Here, we shall see all the NOC Codes available.

Of the 4-digit unique code specifically assigned to each of the occupations, the first digit belongs to the Skill Type required for the job. For example, in NOC Code 2161 [Mathematicians, statisticians and actuaries], the initial digit 2 corresponds, as per the NOC, to “natural and applied sciences and related occupations”.

NOC Code – Skill Type

1st digit of NOC Code Occupation
0 Management occupations
1 Business, finance and administration occupations
2 Natural and applied sciences and related occupations
3 Health occupations
4 Occupations in education, law and social, community and government services
5 Occupations in art, culture, recreation and sport
6 Sales and service occupations
7 Trades, transport and equipment operators and related occupations
8 Natural resources, agriculture and related production occupations
9 Occupations in manufacturing and utilities

Once the Skill Type of the occupation is clear, the Skill Level would have to be determined. Simply put, while 0 is for all management occupations, not all managers do the same work.

NOC Code – Skill Level

2nd digit of NOC Code Skill Level Occupations
- 0 [zero] Management jobs
0 or 1 Skill Level A Professional jobs, usually requiring a university degree
2 or 3 Skill Level B Skilled trades and technical jobs, generally needing a college diploma or training
4 or 5 Skill Level C Intermediate jobs, usually requiring high school education and/or job-specific training
6 or 7 Skill Level D Labour jobs, usually providing on-the-job training

Note. – For management, the 1st digit is always 0. All management occupations are included in Skill Level A.
