UK must devolve immigration powers to Scotland in a fundamental transformation of the existing UK model, according to the think tank IPPR Scotland. The UK is preparing itself to exit the EU. The UK Government must also overhaul the existing immigration model, said the head of IPPR Scotland Russell Gunson.
The IPPR has given conclusions regarding the existing UK Immigration system in its independent report. It states that the current model is devoid of strategic objectives, as quoted by the STV TV. This is because it has been formulated as immediate reactions to operational and political problems.
The think tank has demanded that a new immigration policy must be evolved. This must not be based on a focus on numbers. The immigration policy for the specific area must be linked to social and economic priorities, explains the report.
Commission on Economic Justice of IPPR has produced this report. It states that the changed strategy must devolve immigration powers to Scotland. This must cater to the economic needs of the region, rather than hindering it.
The future immigration strategy for the UK must give enhanced flexibility to geographical requirements in the system. The core principles must assist to cater to resolve the increasing economic disparity across regions in the UK, elaborates the report.
Specific challenges exist in Scotland said, Mr. Gunson. The existing comprehensive nationwide UK policy fails to address this, he added. Scotland has an aging population. Its economy needs to be boosted via enhancing productivity and innovation. It is high time to develop an immigration system that is in coherence with regional demands, explained the IPPR head. This will also be more responsive to the regional economic needs, he said.
