What to do After You Arrive in Portugal as an Au Pair?

After arriving in Portugal as an au pair, applicants should apply for a Portuguese residence permit. Applicants entering Portugal in less than three months will require a short-term Portuguese Schengen visa for business purposes. Applicants who will stay longer than three months must apply for a long-term or Portuguese residency visa before arrival to the country.

As there is no official Au pair program in Portugal, the Host Family needs to employ the Au pair as a regular employee. This means that the Au pair will not receive pocket money but an actual salary corresponding to at least the country's minimum wage. According to the Portuguese Employment Law, employees are entitled to 22 working days of paid holiday per year. The Host Families in Portugal must hire a pair with a regular employment contract.
