Does a 10-Year US Visa Allow Me to Stay in the USA for 10 Years?

No. Your US visa validity and your authorized stay are two completely different things — this is the most commonly misunderstood US visa concept among Indian travellers. A 10-year B-1/B-2 visa only gives you permission to travel to the US and request entry — it does not grant a 10-year right to remain. Your actual authorized stay is recorded on your I-94 (Arrival/Departure Record), issued by CBP at the port of entry, which you should check at i94.cbp.dhs.gov within 24 hours of arrival. For most Indian B-2 visitors, this is 6 months from the entry date — not the visa's 10-year validity.

Overstay consequences: Overstaying your I-94 date — even with a still-valid visa stamp — is a serious immigration violation. Overstays of 180 days to 1 year trigger a 3-year bar from re-entry; overstays beyond 1 year trigger a 10-year bar. These bars begin from your departure date and can also affect future UK, Canada, and Schengen visa applications. If you need more time, file Form I-539 with USCIS at least 45 days before your I-94 expires — approval isn't guaranteed.
