With the pandemic that forced most of us to stay at home almost the whole of the last two years, career stagnation was a harsh reality for many. But with things getting better in 2022, many are considering relocating to another country. Which are the best countries for overseas careers? A new survey by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and The Network reveals the ten most desirable countries to relocate to in 2022.
The survey conducted between October and December 2020 of nearly 209,000 people in 190 countries titled "Decoding Global Talent, Onsite and Virtual" threw up some interesting findings and revealed changing attitudes towards mobility than prevailing a few years ago. The survey revealed that the percentage of people willing to take up an international career came down to 50% in 2020 from 28% in 2018. Interestingly those who wished to move abroad for work were predisposed to favor countries with a successful record in dealing with the pandemic. According to Rainer Strack, a senior partner at BCG and co-author of the report, "COVID is a new variable that is making people cautious about considering international relocation."

Countries that have ranked lower than the previous survey in 2018 or have disappeared from the list include the US, France, Italy, and Spain faced difficulties in controlling the pandemic last year. Countries like the US and Germany have ranked lower in the 2020 survey due to this reason.
Change in the ranking of countries
Countries that could handle the pandemic well have become popular destinations for relocation. These include several countries in the Asia-Pacific region, such as Japan, which has moved up by four places, and Singapore and New Zealand, which have a first-time appearance. Canada's well-planned strategy in tackling the pandemic has helped it move to the top of the list ahead of the US, making it the number one destination to relocate for work.

Willingness to relocate
The survey also revealed that around 50% of respondents were willing to relocate, which declined from 63% of the last survey in 2014. This trend was attributed to the travel restrictions due to the pandemic and the large-scale adoption of remote working, which provided the facility for individuals to work for a foreign company without relocating.
