The number of non-EU workers in the UK has increased in the last 1 year due to a contracting labour market. This is as per the latest statistics revealed by the ONS - Office for National Statistics. The numbers show that more than 1/3rd of the net yearly increase in the number of employed individuals has gone to non-EU workers. The numbers of EU-born nationals has also increased.
The number of non-EU workers in the UK increased by 123,000 in the past 1 year. The increase in the number of workers from the EU was 117,000.
CIPD Senior Labour Market Analyst Gerwyn Davies said that employers in the UK are hiring non-EU workers in comparatively large numbers. This is owing to the acute scarcity of workers in the labour market, he added.
Moreover, nearly all of the growth in employment in the past 1 year has come from full-time, permanent, and skilled jobs. This is contrary to some reports on the labour market, as quoted by the Workplace Insight Net.
UK employers have by and large overcome the restrictions faced while hiring non-EU workers that are not applicable to EU workers currently. Workers from outside the EU are thus playing a crucial role in the UK labour market, particularly in industries like Healthcare.
In the coming days, the statistics may lead to a structural transition in recruiting an increased number of non-EU workers. This is when curbs are eased for non-EU nationals and enhanced for workers from the EU in 2021.
The latest statistics reveal that the growth in pay is showing indications of softening notwithstanding growing employment. The average growth in weekly earnings has decreased modestly in the second month consecutively. It had been relatively increasing sharply in the last 2 years.
Davies said that the comparatively sharp increase in the numbers of non-EU workers has also acted as a break. This is on salaries increasing more rapidly particularly in shortage occupations, he added.
