While adding that the number of UK Visas issued to Indians soared sharply in the recent past, the British High Commission said on 12 December that Indian nationals were also the largest recipients of British Work Visas. In fact, work visas granted to Indians in the UK is more than all other countries put together.

The High Commission in a statement said that the number of visas Indian nationals obtained from September 2016 to September 2017 was 517,000 as it cited data issued by the UK ONS (Office for National Statistics).

Indo-Asian News Service quotes the statement as saying this number showed that visit visas grew by 11 percent to 427,000 and work visa numbers remained steady at 53,000, implying that Indians were obtaining more work visas in the UK than all other countries combined.

Earlier, it was stated that Indian numbers had increased the most in the Student Visa category (Tier 4), as more than 14,000 Student Visas were granted to Indians in 2017, an increase of 27 percent more compared with 2016.

Moreover, more than 5,000 Indians entered the UK for short-term study during the same period. This is said to be the third consecutive quarter where Indian student visa numbers rose.

Dominic Asquith, British High Commissioner to India, said that these figures show that India’s ties with the UK continue to be as firm as ever. He said that he particularly appreciated the sharp uptick in the number of Indian Students opting to make most of UK’s world-class higher education. Asquith said that their visa service for Indians was comparable to any other best ones being offered.

According to him, around 90 percent of applicants obtain a visa and processing was carried out for 99 percent of them within their 15 working days target time.

Adding that he wanted to see more Indians view Britain as their partner country in terms of study, work,  business or tourism, Asquith said that the visits of Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, and John Swinney in the first week of December demonstrated the extent of interest in working with India.
